New York University’s Center for Ancient Studies and Gallatin School of Individualized Study will host the annual Rose-Marie Lewent Conference on Ancient Studies on Mon., April 18, at 4:30 p.m. (NYU’s Jurow Lecture Hall, Silver Center [100 Washington Square East]). This year’s topic, “Democracy, Education, and the Classics,” focuses on the value of the classics in a democratic society, especially for disadvantaged communities. Speakers include the following: John R. MacArthur, president and publisher of Harper’s magazine; Earl Shorris, author of The Life and Times of Mexico (2004); Danielle Allen, dean of Humanities at the University of Chicago; Christopher Zinn, executive director of the Oregon Council for the Humanities; Matthew S. Santirocco, dean of NYU’s College of Arts and Science and director of NYU’s Center for Ancient Studies; and Laura Slatkin, a professor of classics at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study.
