Princeton University President Shirley M. Tilghman To Speak at NYU’s 173rd Commencement

New York University President John Sexton and Board of Trustees Chairman Martin Lipton today announced the names of those to be honored at the University’s 173rd Commencement Exercises, which will be held Thursday, May 12th, in Washington Square Park.

Shirley M. Tilghman, president of Princeton University and professor of microbiology, who will receive a Doctor of Science degree, honoris causa, will offer “A Response on Behalf of the Honorary Degree Recipients,” an NYU tradition.

This year’s other recipients of honorary doctorates are:

  • Louise Bourgeois, sculptor and artist, who will receive a Doctor of Fine Arts degree, honoris causa.
  • Eric Kandel, the Fred Kaveli Professor and director of the Kaveli Institute for Brain Sciences, University Professor at the Center for Neurobiology and Behavior at Columbia University, and a Nobel Laureate, who will receive a Doctor of Science degree, honoris causa.
  • Jaroslav Pelikan, Sterling Professor emeritus of history at Yale University, who will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters degree, honoris causa.
