NYU REVIVES FIORELLO!
Oct. 25-Nov. 3, 2002, Frederick Loewe Theatre, New York University, 35 W. 4th St.
New York University’s Musical Theatre program and The Steinhardt School of Education is honoring Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock and reviving their 1959 Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Fiorello! on the NYU stage.
The musical celebrates the valiant spirit of Mayor LaGuardia, a man who as New York City’s 99th mayor, inspired the citizens of the city through troubled times in the early part of the 20th century. Harnick, who is working with NYU musical theatre faculty and the student cast, has re-written several lyrics specifically for NYU’s production.
Ann Marcus, dean of The Steinhardt School of Education, is hosting a private party to honor Bock and Harnick. “Today, it seems a particularly appropriate show for both our NYU students and New York City audiences as we face the new challenges of the 21st century,” said Dean Marcus. “We are honored that Mr. Harnick has agreed to work directly with our musical theatre students and faculty on this show.”
With a book by Jerome Weidman and George Abbott, and a score by Harnick and Bock (of Fiddler on the Roof), Fiorello! tells the story of the rise to power of New York’s “Little Flower,” Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia.
