Washington Sq. Park to be Center for Music, Drama and Arts Activities New York University today announced the schedule for its Washington Square Park Summer Series 1999. NYU, in conjunction with the Washington Square Coalition and the Department of Parks and Recreation, will once again sponsor the Summer Series program of entertainment and activities for the local community. The Summer Series program, which begins July 1, has brought art, music, drama and recreation to the park every summer since 1988.
All events are free and open to the public. This year’s events include:
- Eric Byron’s Phonographic Sculpture: Classic recordings rendered on the gramophone presented from 12:00 noon - 5:00 pm on the following dates: 7/5, 7/11, 7/12, 7/18, 7/19, 7/25, 7/26, 8/1, 8/2, 8/8, 8/9, 8/15, 8/16, 8/22, 8/23, 8/29, 8/30
- Arts and Crafts for Kids: Free arts and crafts programs led by the Greenwich Village Youth Council from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on the following dates: 7/6, 7/7, 7/8, 7/12, 7/13, 7/14, 7/15, 7/19, 7/20, 7/21, 7/22, 7/26, 7/27, 7/28, 8/2, 8/3, 8/4, 8/5, 8/9, 8/10, 8/11, 8/12, 8/16, 8/17, 8/18, 8/19, 8/23, 8/24, 8/25
- New York University Jazz Quartet: An award winning ensemble led by trumpeter Matt Hilgenberg. Performances from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm on the following dates: 7/7, 7/14, 7/21, 7/28, 8/4, 8/11, 8/18, 8/25
- Magic with a Soulful Touch: performance by internationally acclaimed magician Phillip Jennings on 7/9 at 10:30 am
- Travels with Tricksters: New vaudevillian, physical comedy theatre performed by the Bond Street Theatre Touring Ensemble on 7/16 at 10:30 am
- Senior Citizens Picnic: Celebrating the 26th Anniversary of the founding of the Caring Community. 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm on 7/21
- Storytelling in the Park: Celebrated author Jan Carr will read children’s stories from 4:00 - 4:30 pm on 7/21
- Talking Drums: Percussion sounds and traditional folk songs of West Africa performed by Kobla Dente and the African Music Drum Ensemble at 10:30 am on 7/23
- The Reluctant Dragon: Two performances of a marionette show performed by “Puppets in the Park” at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm on 7/30
- My World Inside Out: Music for Children: The Pure & Simple Trio musically expresses the experiences of childhood at 10:30 am on 8/6
- Music for Aardvarks and Other Mammals: Music and movement classes for children from 6 months to 5 years old using traditional music and the music of David Weinstone given at 10:30 am on 8/10
- Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimy: Unique hand puppet show performed by the Puppetry of Preston Foerder at 10:30 am on 8/13
- End of Season Children’s Party: Features the magic of Sheeza Witch Fun and refreshments at 10:30 am on 8/26
