The Honorable David Bonior, Democratic Whip of the U.S. House of Representatives, will be the keynote speaker at a conference on “The Role of Unions in the 21st Century” to be held on Tuesday, April 8. The Taub Urban Research Center of New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service will sponsor the conference, to be held in the Greenberg Lounge of NYU’s Vanderbilt Hall, 40 Washington Square South (between MacDougal and Sullivan Streets) from 8:30 a.m. - noon.
The Honorable Catherine Nolan, member, New York State Assembly and chair, Assembly Labor Committee, will open the conference, which will include a panel discussion on community organizing and unions to be moderated by Dr. Gordon Lafer, research director, Federation of University Employees at Yale University. Panel participants will include Deborah Bell, coordinator of policy development, District Council 3, AFSCME, AFL-CIO; Wing Lam, executive director, Chinese Staff Workers Association; Ed Ott, director of public policy, New York City Central Labor Council; and Eve Weinbaum, southern regional political director, Union of Needle Industries and Textile Employees.
