How It Works: The University Governance Structure

The University Senate is the highest deliberative body at NYU. It was created for the discussion of university-wide policies and proposed changes in university practices and structure. The Senate sets its agenda with particular concern for academic programs and structure, personnel and budgetary policies, development of facilities and community, professional, and educational relations of the university.

The University Senate, chaired by the University President, is comprised of the Student Senators Council (SSC), the Administrative Management Council (AMC), the Deans Council, the Tenured/Tenure Track Faculty Senators Council, and the Full-Time Continuing Contract Faculty Senators Council. The SSC holds 39 seats on the University Senate and represents student interests on that body.

Student Government Assembly

The NYU Student body is represented by School Senators, Senators at-Large, Alternate Senators at-Large, Council Presidents, and the Global Student Council.

• The Presidents Council (PC) is made up of Presidents representing an individual school's Student Council and Council Presidents representing student constituencies across NYU.
  

• Student Senators Council (SSC) is made of School Senators, Senators at-Large, and Alternate Senators at-Large.

• The Global Student Council (GSC) is represented by the Chairperson of NYU's Student Government Assembly on the University Senate and the Global Vice Chair. The GSC body consists of the Student Body President of NYU Abu Dhabi, the Student Body President of NYU Shanghai, the NYU Abu Dhabi Senator of the Student Senators Council, the NYU Shanghai Senator of the Student Senators Council, the Chairperson of the Site Ambassadors Committee, the Chairpersons of the NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai Global Committees, and Site Ambassadors for every NYU study abroad location.

Meetings

All meetings are being held in a hybrid format, in-person and on Zoom. All details, including the location of meetings, are available on the SGA Google Calendar.  

Student Government Assembly

All Student Government Assembly meetings occur monthly on Thursdays from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM ET. Meetings are open to the NYU community.

Student Senators Council

All Student Senators Council meetings occur biweekly on Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM ET. Meetings are not open to the public, though students may receive a guest pass from a current School Senator or Senator at-Large.

Presidents Council

All Presidents Council meetings occur monthly on Thursdays from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM ET. Meetings are not open to the public, though students may receive a guest pass from a current president. 

Global Student Council

All Global Student Council meetings occur monthly on Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM ET. Meetings are not open to the public, though students may receive a guest pass from a current member.
