New Faculty 2020-2021
The NYU College of Dentistry has built a remarkable cadre of faculty devoted to providing students with the full range of clinical and basic science training in order to prepare them for key roles in our nation's healthcare system. College of Dentistry faculty are also making dramatic progress as researchers in a number of areas, including bone biology, engineering artificial muscle, minimizing the devastating effects of oral cancer, revealing novel targets in programmed cell death, designing and testing dental implants, and reducing oral health disparities.
Jennifer Caplin is Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthodontics. She received a DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and an M.S. degree in Oral Science and a certificate in Orthodontics, both from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry.
Caplin’s research focuses on growth modification in orthodontics, surgical considerations for treating impacted teeth, and interventions in the continuum of cleft lip and palate care. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and is an active member of the American Dental Association and the American Dental Education Association.
Prior to joining NYU, Caplin was an Assistant Professor and Associate Director of Post Graduate Orthodontics in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry.
Shuang Liang is Clinical Assistant Professor of Molecular Pathobiology. He received his Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Louisville and Master’s in Microbiology from Shandong University in China.
Liang’s research and publications are focused on treg regulation and its role in gingival inflammation during pregnancy and its role in periodontal disease-associated adverse pregnancy outcomes. His research interests focused on the pathogenesis of oral bacteria, the homeostasis of immune cells and immune responses, and the host-pathogen interactions.
Prior to joining NYU, Liang was an Assistant Professor and Director of Oral Immunology in the Department of Oral Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Louisville. He has many years of teaching and directing experience in Microbiology Lab, Biotechnology Lab, Oral Immunology course, and Oral Health Seminars.
Rushi Patel is Clinical Assistant Professor of Cariology and Comprehensive Care. He holds a DDS degree from the University of Maryland School of Dental Surgery and completed a general practice residency at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.
Patel also completed a one-year oral and maxillofacial surgery internship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Prior to joining NYU, Patel worked in private practice in Texas. This is his first academic appointment.
Oluwatosin Oyenuga is Clinical Instructor in Cariology and Comprehensive Care. She holds a DDS degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and an M.S. in Biomedical Sciences from the Rutgers Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. She also completed a general practice residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in affiliation with Bronx Care Health Systems Hospital.
Oyenuga is interested in improving communications with diverse populations and understanding the role of health literacy in oral health. She recently completed the Oral Health Leadership Development Program through the Academy for Advancing Leadership. She is a member of the American Dental Association, the New York State Dental Association, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
This is Oyenuga’s first academic appointment.
Hanan Selim is Clinical Instructor of Cariology and Comprehensive Care. She holds a DDS degree from NYU College of Dentistry and completed a general practice residency at Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn.
Selim is a member of the American Dental Association, the New York State Dental Association, and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, as well as the NYU Dentistry chapter of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) dental honor society.
Prior to joining NYU, Selim worked in private practice in New York. This is her first academic appointment.
Marianna Rokkas is Clinical Instructor of Cariology and Comprehensive Care. She received her DDS degree from Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania, and a certificate from the NYU Comprehensive Dentistry Program for International Dentists. Rokkas also completed specialty training in prosthodontics at NYU.
Prior to this appointment, Rokkas served as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Prosthodontics at New York University College of Dentistry. This is her first academic appointment.
Archana Viswanath is Clinical Associate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology and Medicine. She received a BDS degree and completed a general practice residency program at KLE Society Institute of Dental Sciences in Bangalore, India. She received a Master's in Dental Sciences, Orofacial Pain and Tempromandibular Disorders and completed a fellowship in Orofacial Pain and TMD Disorders, both at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship program in Oral and Craniofacial Biology at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.
Viswanath’s research interests include evaluating the efficacy of different properties in reducing postoperative edema and pain following extraction and evaluating the clinical presentation of temporomandibular joint disorder in patients. She is an active member of the International Association of Dental Research and the American Association of Dental Research.
Prior to joining NYU, Viswanath was an Assistant Professor in the Craniofacial Pain Center of the Department of Diagnostic Services and Director of Clinical Research in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.
