As Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Academic Affairs, Dr. J. Ryan Poynter focuses on issues related to undergraduate education, including academic policies, academic advising, cross-school curricula, multi-school programs, and technology-enhanced education. He oversees the Academic Affairs Office, which is responsible for monitoring student-athletes' academic progress; certifying their eligibility to compete; and supporting the recruitment process. In addition to chairing the Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Committee, he convenes the Advising Deans group and assists the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Academic Affairs and for the Humanities in coordinating the meetings and activities of the Undergraduate Deans group, the Undergraduate Program Committee, and the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Committee. He also supports the Vice Provost for Educational Technologies in coordinating the Faculty Committee on the Future of Technology-Enhanced Education at NYU.
Before joining the Provost’s Office in 2011, Dr. Poynter served as Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at NYU College of Arts and Science. He received his bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and his doctorate in French and African American Studies from Yale University, where he was a Whiting Fellow in the Humanities and was a co-winner of the Peyre Prize for outstanding dissertation in French. He has translated several volumes of Alexander von Humboldt’s writings on his travels in the Americas, including Views of the Cordilleras and Monuments of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas (University of Chicago Press, 2013) and Political Essay on the Kingdom of New Spain [2. vol.] (University of Chicago Press, 2019).
