New York

Since 2002:

  • Launched the Partners Initiative, the largest expansion of tenured and tenure-track positions in the arts and sciences in NYU’s history.
  • Restored engineering as an academic discipline at NYU after an absence of 40 years.
  • Built first dedicated science facility for NYU in 30 years, expanding the space for life sciences at Washington Square by approximately 30 percent.
  • Responded to the Mayor Bloomberg’s Applied Sciences NYC challenge, leading to the creation of the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) in Brooklyn
  • Created the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (ISAW)
  • Launched the Moore-Sloan Data Science Environment Initiative
  • Created NYU MAGNET (Media and Games Network), creating in Brooklyn the first collaborative space for several NYU schools to advance the fields of game design, digital media design, digital education, computer science, and engineering.
  • Created a Faculty of Health, and the NYU School of Global Public Health
  • Launched The Marron Institute on Cities
  • Instituted a program to make undocumented applicants living in New York State eligible for the same institutional scholarship aid opportunities as other US applicants.
  • Began a pilot program to create a “Box-blind” student application process that involves a preliminary admissions decision without awareness of whether a student “checked the box” about a previous criminal conviction and a second review by specially-trained admissions officers to assess whether the applicant’s record raises safety concerns for the NYU community.

Global Network

Since 2002:

  • First major US research university to open and operate comprehensive, liberal arts degree-granting campuses abroad —in Shanghai and in Abu Dhabi
  • Sends more students on study abroad and educates more international students than any other US university — the first university in 15 years to be #1 in both categories, according to the Institute of International Education.
  • NYU’s Study Away program added five new academic sites (Accra, Berlin, Sydney, Tel Aviv, and Washington, DC) to its longstanding European and South American locations, bringing to 11 the total sites for NYU’s Study Away program, and expanding to six continents.
  • The number of undergraduates studying abroad doubled
  • Created programs so that even pre-meds/science majors could study away and continue to make progress towards degree.
  • Launched Global Research Initiatives (GRI), which supports faculty and graduate student research at NYU's global sites
    • Since launch, funding for research at eight NYU global sites abroad has been provided to over 82 faculty members and over 400 graduate students
