Adding A Search to Your Site

Since 2002, NYU has used the Google Search Appliance to handle searching on the nyu.edu domain.

Google's indexing robot starts at the top of the NYU Web site and follows links to find all indexable pages within the NYU search collection. All you need to do to get your Web pages into the main NYU Google index is:

  • put the pages up in a Web space that is not excluded from the NYU search collection
  • make sure your pages don't contain meta tags that prevent the robot from indexing your page
  • make sure your page can be reached by clicking links from one of the top-level pages on the NYU site

There is no need to submit pages to the index: the Google crawler will pick up changed, new, and removed pages automatically during its scheduled crawls.

However, if you would like to create a custom search for your individual site content, you can add a search box to your own site.

Add a Search Box and Results Page

Google allows us to offer customized search result pages through the use of style sheets. There are two options for your search result pages; you can either use the default NYU search results page (as in the results displayed using the main NYU Search, or you can customize the search results so that they have the existing look and feel of your Web site.

  • Using the NYU Search Results Style Sheet
This is the most basic implementation of the search box and search results page. You will not need to create any additional files to use this style. The style used in the search results page mirrors the main NYU Search results style.

  • Using a Customized Search Results Style Sheet
This implementation allows you to customize the search results page with the same look and feel of your Web site. You will need to add specific html code to a separate style sheet.

If your site is not on www.nyu.edu and you wish to have results appear in the main NYU search results, please write to:

Please note:
The NYU Google Search code cannot be implemented on sites housed on the homepages.nyu.edu server.
