Angelica Sanchez appeared as CapitalBop's Traveling Loft headliner on Saturday, May 4, at NYU Washington, DC. Sanchez presented a new, nine-piece ensemble, making its D.C. debut. The full band lineup for the nonet included: Chris Speed, tenor saxophone; Michael Attias, alto saxophone; Ben Goldberg, clarinet; Thomas Heberer, trumpet; Kenny Warren, trumpet; Omar Tamez, guitar; John Hebert, bass; and Sam Ospovat, drums.
The New York Times’s Nate Chinen once wrote that Angelica Sanchez enjoys “building structures and breaking free of them.” It’s that push-and-pull between chaos and order that makes her composing, arranging and playing so powerful — and so distinctive.
The legendary, D.C.-based drummer Nasar Abadey opened for Sanchez, leading a trio of musicians whose powerful creativity served up a formidable first helping before Sanchez’s restless, searching ensemble took over.
Past CapitalBop presentations at NYU Washington, DC include Vijay Iyer and Wadada Leo Smith, Odean Pope’s Saxophone Choir, Michael Formanek’s Ensemble Kolossus, the Oliver Lake Big Band or, most recently, the Tiger Trio.
