Living Off Campus

Each fall, more than 500 new freshman and transfer students come to NYU as commuter students - those who do not live in an NYU residence hall.

Commuter Student Services at the Student Resource Center supports commuter students through specifically designed programs and services. Social and educational programs connect commuters with each other, residential students, and campus resources. Major programs and resources include the sponsorship of overnight accommodations near campus for commuters during final exams; commuting resources, even a kitchen for storing and heating your brown-bag lunches, as well as the provision of lockers in Kimmel to be rented by commuter students each semester.

New Commuter Student To-Do List

You have probably already received mailings with important information about NYU resources, services, and even deadlines and requirements to fulfill. To help you manage your transition, the Student Resource Center has prepared the following 'to-do' list for new commuter students. If you have questions about these items, or about being a new NYU student, contact the Student Resource Center at 212-998-4411 or email ask.src@nyu.edu.

  • Connect with your Commuter Assistant — new commuters will receive an email in August from your Commuter Assistant; contact www.nyu.edu/src/commuters for more information.
  • Pay tuition: Due August 13 — remember that NYU doesn't send paper bills, so you should pay electronically through NYUHome. Visit www.nyu.edu/bursar for more info.
  • Accept or waive NYU Health Insurance — if you plan to waive the NYU health insurance, it's most convenient to complete the waiver before you pay your tuition, but be sure to meet the waiver deadline on September 30th. Visit www.nyu.edu/health for more information and the online waiver form.
  • Get your NYUCard — if you didn't get your NYUCard at a summer orientation, stop by the Kimmel Center on move-in day (August 26th), or visit the NYUCard Center during Welcome Week. For hours and location, visit www.nyu.edu/nyucard/about/location.hours.html.
  • Attend your school's orientation — you may have already attended a summer orientation for your school, but if your school has orientation at another time, be sure to attend. For a list of school orientation dates and contacts, visit Events and Traditions.
  • Register for classes — your school will provide registration information, either at orientation or through the mail this summer. If you have questions about registration, visit www.advisement.nyu.edu to connect with an academic advisor from your school.
  • Attend Welcome Week — Welcome Week offers over 250 programs from August 27-31 where you can meet new people, learn about NYU and NYC, and have a great time in the process. All new students will receive a complete list of programs in early August. For more information, visit www.nyu.edu/src/events.traditions/welcome.week.html.
  • Purchase books — once you've registered for classes, head to the NYU Bookstore, where you can print out a list of the books you'll need and then purchase them. You can also order books online through the NYU Bookstores website at www.bookstores.nyu.edu/

Commuter Assistants

Commuter Student Services at the Student Resource Center is home to the Commuter Assistant Program, which matches all new undergraduate commuters with knowledgeable and experienced returning commuter students. CAs provide outreach, resources, and general support to new commuter students and are available to answer questions about NYU, New York City, and college student life. CAs use their experiences to offer personalized support for first year commuter students and in most cases, are matched by school or program. CAs are in contact with their students via weekly updates that provide information about events and student resources and are available to meet one on one with students through weekly office hours.

All new commuter students will be contacted by their Commuter Assistant in August. For more information about the Commuter Assistant program, visit www.nyu.edu/src/commuters/commuter.assistants.html.

Commuter Student Involvement

The Commuter Circle and the Off-Campus Student Council are great ways for commuter students to connect with other commuters, to get involved on campus, and to gain valuable leadership experience. Both of these organizations are supported by the Student Resource Center and co-sponsor programs during Welcome Week, Commuter Appreciation Week, sponsor weekly lunches which highlight university resources, present monthly programs, and the annual Breakfast-for-Dinner. Visit www.nyu.edu/src/commuters for more information.

In addition to student organizations, students are invited to participate in the Discoveries Program which connects commuters with faculty. Through Discoveries students can engage in valuable learning experiences outside of the traditional classroom environment over lunch or through city excursions. The Program features professors from a variety of academic interests, who provide personal insight into their experiences and areas of expertise.

Of course, commuter students are also encouraged to take advantage of a multitude of involvement opportunities that are open to all students. From athletics to community service, multicultural programming, and the LGBT community, to religious life and student clubs and organizations, there are endless ways to get involved. Developing these networks and your leadership skills through involvement on-campus will enhance your career and life skills for the future. See a comprehensive list of opportunities at www.nyu.edu/src/getting.involved for more information.
