Which Committee?

NYU School of Medicine -- Institutional Review Board

Investigators from the School of Medicine and those from the College of Dentistry whose proposed research involves direct contact with patients should apply to NYU School of Medicine Institutional Review Board.

UCAIHS

Investigators from all divisions/units of NYU exclusive of the School of Medicine and investigators from the College of Dentistry whose proposed research involves only secondary data and/or discarded teeth and tissue should apply to the UCAIHS.

Investigator Status: UCAIHS Special Categories

Here are specific instructions for special categories:

Investigators recruiting from the Psych Pool

Investigators whose proposed work includes recruitment of subjects through the Department of Psychology Psych Pool must first apply for approval through the Psych Pool. The Psych Pool administrator will forward the application, when approved, to the UCAIHS for final review. Investigators may not begin research activities with human subjects until UCAIHS approval has been received.

Investigators proposing work at the Center for Brain Imaging (CBI)

Applicants from Washington Square units whose proposed work includes use of the fMRI/MRI at the Center for Brain Imaging must use the CBI templates for the application and consent forms and must have their work reviewed by the Center's Administrative Coordinator prior to submission to the UCAIHS. The CBI administrator will supply the investigator with a letter of approval to be included in the application to the UCAIHS.

Applicants from the School of Medicine whose proposed work makes use of the fMRI/MRI at the CBI should be advised that they must either:

  • Incorporate the CBI template language for consent forms into the IBRA-approved consent forms and exclude any implication of medical use of the CBI equipment (which is not a diagnostic machine); or
  • Develop a separate application to the UCAIHS following the CBI templates for application and Consent Forms for the parts of the project to be carried out at the CBI. Investigators should include reference to the use of the CBI in the IBRA-approved Consent Form, should there be one, using language such as: "As part of this study, subjects may be screened for and be asked to participate in brain scanning by fMRI at the NYU Dept. of Psychology Center for Brain Imaging. An explanation of fMRI technology, procedures for scanning participation, and any risks and benefits will be provided separately, and subjects who are asked and agree to take part in fMRI scanning sessions will also need to sign a separate consent form, participate in separate assent procedures and have separate parental permission, as appropriate."

Investigators from the College of Dentistry proposing work involving de-identified secondary data, chart review, or discarded teeth/tissue

Investigators at the College of Dentistry whose proposed work involves use of de-identified secondary data, chart review in which the investigator records no identifying information, and/or discarded teeth or tissue, but includes no direct contact with patients should apply to the UCAIHS rather than to the NYU Medical School IRB, the Institutional Board of Research Associates (IBRA). Questions on whether the UCAIHS is the appropriate IRB should be discussed first with the College of Dentistry Associate Dean for Research (See UCAIHS Policy on Publicly Available and De-Identified Data - Section Biological Specimens and De-identified Patient Chart Data (formerly Class B))

.

Investigators from Washington Square Units working at the School of Medicine with Medical School colleagues

Investigators from the Washington Square units who are proposing work with colleagues at the Medical School on a project being carried out at the School of Medicine or that is part of the research being done by a Medical School investigator should submit, in place of a full UCAIHS application, only the following:

  • Completed and signed UCAIHS application cover page;
  • A brief (no more than one page) statement of the purpose of the research;
  • A copy of the IBRA approval for the project;
  • A brief letter from the investigator named in the IBRA approval confirming the UCAIHS applicant is participating in the research.

Investigators who are NYU non-faculty applicants or from other organizations

All investigators who are students (graduate or undergraduate) or do not have NYU Principal Investigator status must have a faculty sponsor in order to submit an application to the UCAIHS.
