NYU Cinematheque

NYU Cinematheque is a program that aspires to expose NYU students to a wide range of important yet entertaining films, the likes of which are frequently absent from course curriculums. Ranging from obscure and under-appreciated titles to beloved classics, each month's programming will revolve around a theme that runs through each of the films. With an introduction to place the film in its proper context and occasional post-screening discussions, each month's films share a continuity that encourages a further understanding of one of cinema's diverse sub-genres or subject matters. With a new title premiering each on the University Channel each Thursday night at 8:30 pm during the school year before entering the Movie Channel's weekly rotation, NYU Cinematheque hopes to provide an intriguing and interesting alternative for NYU students fascinated with the diversity of what the medium of cinema has to offer.

November: Women in Danger
From the heroines of melodramas tied to the railroad tracks to scream queens from 1980s horror films, the cinema has a rich tradition of creating suspense by threatening the lives of its female characters. The Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, represents the apex of this convention, and these three films from the 1940s showcase some of his finest and most suspenseful films, all centered around a female protagonist and the mysterious males that threaten her. The last film, a gripping classic from the same era, stars frequent Hitchcock star Ingrid Bergman in one of the greatest examples of a woman being plotted against.

11/04: Rebecca (Alfred Hitchcock, 1940)

A middle-class young woman (Joan Fontaine) gets caught up in more than she bargained for when she is swept off her feet by the wealthy Max de Winter (Laurence Olivier), heir of the Manderlay estate. The shadow of Max’s late wife Rebecca hangs over life in the manor home, and Max’s re-marriage eventually initiates the revelation of sordid and scandalous details surrounding the life -- and mysterious death -- of Rebecca.

Suspicion (1941)

11/11::Suspicion (Alfred Hitchcock, 1941)

Johnny Aysgarth, a handsome gambler, meets shy Lina McLaidlaw on a train. She soon falls in love with him and before long, they are married. It isn’t until after their honey moon that Lina starts to know Johnny’s true character and becomes suspicious of him after his friend and business partner is mysteriously murdered.

Notorious

11/18: Notorious (Alfred Hitchcock, 1944)

Ingrid Bergman is selected for a top-secret, undercover mission in Europe, granted close access to a suspected high-ranking member of the Third Reich because of her late father’s sympathies. But she gets in over her head when the charming Nazi (Claude Rains), who knows more than he lets on, asks her to be his wife. The CIA agent responsible for her case (Cary Grant) must bail out the woman he has fallen in love with while he still can.

Gaslight

11/25 Gaslight (George Cukor, 1944)

Paula (Ingrid Bergman) suffers a terrible trauma by discovering her wealthy aunt’s murdered body and is sent away to boarding school to recover for ten years. On her return, she and her new husband (Charles Boyer) move in to the same London townhouse. Paula becomes increasingly paranoid and unsettled by memories and events surrounding the murder, and her new husband may know more about that fateful night than he has ever let on.


About the Host

DAIN GODING (Host/Co-Creator)
Dain Goding is a senior in the Cinema Studies department of Tisch School of the Arts. He is interested in film restoration and the public exhibition of classic films, and his dream is to own his own repertory movie theater. He admires the films of Stanley Kubrick, Orson Welles, Roman Polanski, and Val Lewton, and has a particular interest in American horror films of the 1930s and 1940s. He once saw Cat People on the big screen three times in one week.
