August is here and the NYU Movie Channel has got you covered with back-to-school classics like Ferris Bueller's Day Off and the hottest new releases like 21, 10,000 B.C. and The Bank Job. Want something a little different? Then check out Be Kind Rewind, Funny Games, and The Killing of John Lennon. Flling out the the roster this month, we have Sean Penn in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Owen Wilson in the Judd Apatow produced Drillbit Taylor and the classic "coming of age" story Stand by Me. 10,000 B.C. (2008)

In this prehistoric epic a 21-year-old mammoth hunter journeys through the three stages in the development of primitive man. As the mammoth herd migrates through his tribe’s homeland, he must try to secure the future of his tribe.

21 (2008)

This film is the true story of six MIT students who were trained by Professor Rosa to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions. Ben Campbell was the most gifted of the students and although he started playing just to pay his school bills, he got caught up in the game and wanted to lead the team instead of taking orders in this high stakes drama.

Be Kind Rewind (2008)

When Jerry becomes magnetized due to an accident at the local power plant, he accidentally erases all of the video tapes at the store where his friend works. The pair re-enacts and re-films every film in the store from The Lion King to Ghostbusters to Back to the Future in this raucous comedy.

Drillbit Taylor (2008)

Two high school freshmen are targeted by the school bully on the first day of school. To avoid being tortured all year, the boys hire a low-budget bodyguard to protect them in this comedy… but unfortunately, they got what they paid for!

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

This freewheeling story chronicles the sexual insecurities and adventures of a group of Southern California high school students. These shopping mall regulars experiment with drugs, surfing techniques and various fast-food secret sauce combinations. And in class (when they even go to class!) they wreak havoc… especially when the pizza delivery arrives.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

This classic teen film chronicles the events in the day of a young man named Ferris, who gives into an overwhelming urge to cut school. One spring day, toward the end of his senior year, Ferris plays hooky and heads for downtown Chicago with his girlfriend and best friend in tow, to see the sights, experience a day of freedom and show that with a little ingenuity, a bit of courage and a red Ferrari, life at 17 can be a joy!

Funny Games (2007)

This disturbing thriller revolves around a middle class family who settle into their vacation home only to be taken hostage by two psychotic young men. The family is subjected to physical and mental torture in this film that explores the way violence is portrayed in the media.

Stand by Me (1986)

A coming-of-age story set in summer 1959 in rural Oregon, this film portrays a journey embarked upon by four 12 year-old boys across the woodlands to see the dead body of another boy who was close to their age. Through the boys' misadventures and conversations, we learn how and why each of the boys lives in the shadow of their fathers and older brothers, and how their lives are held in place by the raucous comradeship of best friends.

The Bank Job (2008)

In this true story of a 1970s London bank heist, a group of burglars tunnel through to the basement of a bank. The police respond but do not catch them and they end up stealing the contents of the safety deposit boxes which contain compromising photographs and other evidence of wrong-doing by major politicians and businessmen.

The Killing of John Lennon (2007)

This film is a dramatization of the planning of the murder of John Lennon by Mark David Chapman. We are given insight into Chapman’s disturbed childhood, his psychotic tendencies and finally his decision to kill arguably the most famous person on the planet. The story is told in the actual words of Chapman taken from his detailed diaries.
