The building at 18 Waverly Place dates back to 1891, a time when the area east of Washington Square was a center of light industry and manufacturing in New York City. The building housed a candy factory from 1937 until 1986. This company, Kopper's Chocolates, produces the violet and white chocolate mints that are served at the Torch Club today.
The Torch Club opened its doors to the NYU community in 1999, after an extensive renovation orchestrated by the architectural firm of Beyer, Blinder and Belle.
Photographs, paintings, prints and other memorabilia demonstrating the history of New York University adorn the walls throughout the Club. Also on display is the sterling silver torch that is traditionally carried at the head of University processions; this beautiful torch was created by Tiffany & Co. and was donated to NYU by Helen Miller Gould in 1911.
In addition to showcasing NYU's history, the Torch Club also highlights the many exciting accomplishments being made at the University today. The latest publications of our faculty members are displayed at the Club, and the University's recent trustee, faculty, alumni, and administrative leaders are recognized on plaques in our conference rooms.
