Audiovisual Workshop for Librarians
- With co-sponsorship from the International Association of Sound
and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) and the Coordinating Council of
Audiovisual Associations (CCAAA), AVMS conducted a full-day workshop
for librarians attending the August 2009 IFLA conference in Milan
Italy. The workshop was aimed at librarians in organizations
where preservation and access for a/v material was not their primary
occupation, but who still need to understand handling and management of
a/v materials. Approximately 50 people from 29 countries attended
the workshop, which was held at Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI), and
numerous people were turned away because of perceived lack of
space. UNESCO subsidized the attendance of 8 professionals from
less developed countries. Howard Besser of NYU's Moving Image
Archiving & Preservation program was the primary instructor, and
Pio Michele Pellizzari (Chair of IASA's Training & Education
Committee) and Kurt Deggeller (Convenor of CCAAA) also gave
talks. The workshop was very successful at helping librarians
learn about handling of a/v materials, and another workshop will be
held in conjunction with the 2011 IFLA conference. The slides
from Howard's presentations are available at http://besser.tsoa.nyu.edu/howard/Talks/.
UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual
Heritage
- Numerous interesting events were held around the world for World
Audiovisual Heritage Day. For links to some of these, see http://www.pia.gov.ph/wdavh2009/.
Unfortunately,
very few events were held within North America.
- As part of this year's celebrations, UNESCO held a competition to
create a logo
for Audiovisual Heritage. The competition was won by Mr
Achilleus Coronel of the Philippines with this logo:
Legal Deposit Survey
- AVMS has begun administering a survey of legal deposit
regulations regarding audiovisual materials in countries around the
world. Legal deposit is an important concept in bulding national
collections (like that of the Library of Congress) by requiring that a
copy of most content distributed in a country be deposited within a
national collection. This survey is designed to shed light on the
different legal schemes for deposit in various countries, as well as to
try to determine which approaches are most effective in assuring
comprehensive national collections. The survey was designed by
James Turner of Université de Montréal, and Howard Besser
and Kara van Malssen of NYU, and is administered by Howard and
Kara. Though US and Canadian librarians have already filled out
the survey for those countries, you may want to examine the survey at http://tinyurl.com/avms-survey.
Guidelines
Joint Technical Symposium
- CCAAA's Joint Technical Symposium is an important venue for
sharing the latest technical techniques for audiovisual
archiving. It is held every 3 years, and the next symposium will
be held May 2010 in Oslo in conjunction with the annual conference of
the International Federation of Film Archives. This symposium is
entitled Digital Challenges and Digital Opportunities in Audiovisual
Archiving. The website for the symposium should be http://www.jts2010.org/.
Next IFLA meeting
- The next IFLA meeting will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden in
August. AVMS will sponsor a session entitled “Open access – on
the horns of a dilemma between piracy and legality?” and is currently
soliciting papers on the topic.
