Here are research projects undertaken by NYU's Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program
- Video At Risk: Strategies for Preserving Commercial Video Collections in Research Libraries
- A Mellon Foundation–funded 2–year partnership project between MIAP, NYU–Libraries, the University of California Berkeley, and Loyola University (New Orleans), seeking to meet the challenges of preserving out–of–print VHS titles in circulating Research Library collections by creating a 'roadmap' for navigating issues of replaceability, intellectual property, and technological obsolescence.

- A research initiative funded by the US Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) that seeks to generate awareness of the special requirements for preserving audiovisual records and improve staffing for moving image archiving and preservation in libraries.
- Audiovisual Preservation Exchange (APEX): Argentina 2009
- As part of NYU's Audio-Visual Preservation Exchange (APEX), a team of film experts and archivists from the United States under the direction of professor Dan Streible traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina this past May to help the Museo del Cine preserve its orphan films.
- Audiovisual Preservation Exchange (APEX): Ghana 2008 and 2009.
- In 2008, MIAP faculty members Mona Jimenez and Chris Lacinak, and Senior Research Fellow Kara Van Malssen, visited Ghana to conduct workshops, site visits, training, research, and build relationships with colleagues in West Africa. Mona and Kara returned in 2009 to conduct a full week-long workshop with 26 participants and place MIAP student Jennifer Blaylock in a 10 week summer internship.
- Results You Can't Refuse: Celebrating 30 Years of BB Optics.
- MIAP students collaborated with Anthology Film Archives to honor the preservation work of avant-garde filmmaker, preservationist, and current MIAP Adjunct Professor, Bill Brand. This project culminated in a series of film screenings at Anthology FIlm Archives and a published book of essays contributed by members of the preservation community.
- Digital Public Television Preservation
- A collaborative project between NYU MIAP, the NYU Digital Library, Public Television stations WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston, and PBS.
- Disaster Preparedness and Recovery: Projects and Resources
- Research Projects, Workshops, and Resources associated with disaster planning and the recovery of moving image and sound materials.
