Moving image and recorded sound archivists are charged with distilling memory and history in a climate of global conflicts and rapid technological change. Today's archivists face an array of challenges, from conserving obsolete formats and prolonging the life of decaying materials, to addressing the ethics of preservation for works historically underrepresented by governments and media conglomerates. To enhance international awareness of these issues, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has established October 27, 2007 as the first-annual World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.

In celebration of the World Day, New York University's Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program and NYU Libraries are proud to present a showcase of recently acquired archival footage from the Tamiment Library's Communist Party USA Collection. Heralded by the New York Times, this body of films and newsreels represents an opportunity to "revise assumptions on both the left and right about one of the most contentious subjects in American history." This screening will offer the first glimpse into a landmark collection currently being processed for access.
