Ethan Gates,Spring 2014, Major League Baseball

The Major League Baseball Film & TV Archive has been a terrific opportunity to work with a wide variety of content and formats, in an environment quite different from the dingy library basement we generally picture when we think of archives. At MLB I was able to balance hands-on tasks like film repair and inventory or audio digitization with challenging, broader issues of collections management and organization. It felt very productive to aid the organization with its ongoing, increasing preservation efforts, not just in terms of attaching leader to a worn-out 16mm element, but by debating accession procedure and digital migration. MLB Productions is a fast-paced, big-budget production environment, but it's been valuable to see how better archival practices can be not only implemented but welcomed by a corporation that appreciates its own history.
