The Technical Production Track is a studio in the Undergraduate Drama Department of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Its mission is to teach the production aspects of the theatre.
The Technical Production Track trains Undergraduate Designers, Managers and Technicians. Students graduate from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, Department of Drama with a BFA in Theatre.
The Technical Production Track is one of eleven studios in the Drama Department. The studio training is structured in a conservatory style where students spend three days a week, approximately 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM in studies geared toward their primary focus -- acting, directing, or technical production. The remaining two days are for academic classes. Following its commitment to training students not only to make theatre but to also know it as an art and as an institution, the Drama Department offers one of the most innovative programs in academic theatre study. All Drama students take a minimum of seven theatre studies courses in fields such as dramatic literature, theatre history, world drama, and performance studies.
The overall goal of the Technical Production Track is to provide undergraduate students with the skills, techniques and experiences necessary to pursue a career in the design and production areas of the performing arts. For some students this training will prepare them for graduate school in design, technical production or stage/production management, while others will begin entry level careers in the theatre or related performing arts.
Graduates of this program are professionals who have a trained intellect and imagination, excellent communication skills, and a broad range of experience.
UNIVERSITY STUDIES
The unique structure of the Drama Department provides an opportunity to diversify and expand each student's undergraduate experience beyond the theatre. For the BFA degree, all students are required to fulfill thirty-two points of general education courses. Twenty additional points may be used to explore a minor, double major, or sample courses from the many schools and departments of the University. It is expected that Tech Track students will pursue a broad liberal arts experience within New York University in order to bring experiences from multiple disciplines into their work.
