ETW began in 1975. Our faculty was drawn from major experimental theatre companies, including Mabou Mines, Charles Ludlum's Ridiculous Theatrical Company, The Performance Group, Squat Theater, The Iowa Theater Lab, The Mary Overlie Dance Company, and Grotowski's Polish Lab Theater. Later on, the faculty was joined by other leaders in contemporary theatre, dance, and music, most notably Anne Bogart. This group of artists/teachers collaborated to develop the core ETW curriculum-a curriculum based on innovative approaches to physically-based performance, and informed by a postmodern, non-hierarchical understanding of structure and process.
Over the years our curriculum has evolved to include a wide range of approaches to acting, dance, self-scripting, and vocal performance. Rather than imposing a single aesthetic frame, the ETW curriculum provides students with fundamental performance skills, while helping them discover and shape their own unique artistic vision.
