Recycling

At NYU we need to do our part to reduce our campus ecological footprint. Please take a moment to review how you can recycle to make a difference. Mixed recycling bins for paper, glass, plastic and metal are located throughout NYU buildings. NYU also provides specific collection areas for items that do not belong in the everyday recycling.

Start Recycling

NYU has mixed recycling. It is not necessary to separate paper and cardboard products from glass, metal, and plastic items in NYU buildings. The following items can be placed in any of the recycling bins located throughout campus:

What can I put in mixed recycling?

  • All Paper & Cardboard
(such as newspapers, pizza boxes, rinsed milk/juice cartons, mail, catalogs, magazines, scrap paper, and packaging)
  • All Plastics & Plastic Films
(such as bags, bottles, plastic film/wrap, rinsed food storage containers, and utensils)
  • Glass (except window glass and lightbulbs)
  • Metals (such as cans, foil, & rinsed food storage containers)

Do NOT place in mixed recycling:

  • Liquids
  • Food Waste
  • Food-Soiled Containers (non-plastic coated pizza boxes, paper coffee cups, etc.)

While the Mixed Recycling system is available in most residence halls, some are serviced by Department of Sanitation, which separates paper from cans and bottles. These buildings are clearly labeled so the proper sorting can occur.

General recycling is collected by Action Carting and brought to nearby transfer and sorting facilities.

How do I recycle CFLs?

Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) should be recycled in separate bins. These highly-energy efficient lightbulbs contain mercury, and must be recycled to avoid toxic contamination of the environment.

In Residence Halls, bring the CFL to your Resource Center.

In office and academic spaces, contact Client Services Center at contactcsc@nyu.edu.

How Do I Recycle Techno Scrap?

Proper disposal of Techno Scrap is required to ensure these items do not leak toxic chemicals into the environment. Techno Scrap includes:

  • Cell Phones
  • Jewel Cases
  • VHS Tapes
  • Cassettes
  • Diskettes
  • CDs & DVDs
  • Cables and Wiring
  • Batteries
  • Ink Jet & Toner Cartridges
  • Digital Cameras

In Residence Halls, bring your Techno Scrap to your Resource Center. In office and academic spaces, Techno Scrap collection bins are located throughout the building, if you cannot find one please contact the Client Services Center at contactcsc@nyu.edu and ask for the nearest location of a routine pick up or to request a one time pick up of Techno Scrap items.

If you would like to pick up large amounts of Techno Scrap on campus, you can submit a request with the following form. Be sure to specify that the pickup is technoscrap in the Work Description section.

Techno Scrap is currently being handled by GreenDisk.

Asset Management

Asset Management If an office is moving, please contact Asset Management with any used office furniture and technology. Someone from the Asset Management office will arrange for your items to be brought to a central location and handled accordingly.

If the items are small, such as a keyboard or computer mouse rather than a whole computer set-up, such items can be placed in Techno Scrap bins (see above).

Asset Management will record the items and offer them for reuse. If they are not reusable, the items will be marked with a disposal tag.

Other Info

Books, clothing and non-perishable food may be donated to the annual Green Apple Move Out (GAMO) program that takes place in May at all Residence Halls. These items are donated to local non profits.

Please do not hesitate to contact Client Serves at contactcsc@nyu.edu with any questions, for more information, or to have your recycling bin emptied.
