Student Groups
Here is an overview of the many clubs and student groups on campus whose missions or activities often take on an environment- or sustainability-related focus. There has been an explosion in student participation in and engagement with sustainability, and there have never been more options for students interested in getting involved!
Listservs
Green Arch is the one-stop social hub for NYU's green community, posting information about sustainability-themed events around NYU and NYC, as well as organizing informal meetups and generating ideas and feedback about greening projects around campus.
Sustainable Minded Interactive Technology (SMIT) is a list dedicated to discussions of the intersection of technology and ecological awareness (led by alumni from the NYU Tisch Interactive Telecommunications Program). It's also a good source for information on events in the New York City area.
The ELS "Greenlist" is an eclectic monthly calendar of environmental events happening in and around the city.
Clubs
Earth Matters! is the premier campus-wide undergraduate environmental club at NYU. EM! blends events on campus and workshops in the community with activist campaigns in coordination with national organizations.
Environmental Law Society (ELS) is a student-run organization for future environmental lawyers and all law students interested in environmental issues. Some of the ELS-sponsored programs include brown-bag lunch series featuring prominent environmental lawyers and scholars; legal projects in which they partner with local or national environmental organizations to provide research assistance; and hiking and camping trips in the Hudson River Valley area.
Wagner Environmental Policy Action (WEPA) is dedicated to raising the environmental awareness of the Wagner Graduate School of Public Service community and to contributing to the process of making New York University a more environmentally educated and responsible institution.
Urban Planning Student Association (Wagner) is a student-run organization whose mission is to help students develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of various planning issues by providing quality lectures and programming which reflect the interests of students while introducing them to new ideas. UPSA also strives to improve and raise the profile of Wagner's Urban Planning Program within the school and among other planning schools.
Stern Campus Greening Committee (SCGC) is a school-wide effort to lessen Stern’s environmental footprint. A cooperative venture of administrators, faculty and students, the SCGI aims to make living a “green” lifestyle easier, and strives to change the culture of the school to one more socially conscience and engaged.
Social Enterprise Association at the Stern School of Business serves as a resource and conduit for students who desire to use their business skills for social good in the for-profit, non-profit, and public sectors.
Community Agriculture Club is a new club focused on learning about gardening. Soon to partner with the Green Thumb Community garden, they plan to involve students in the local community outside the University, and at the same time raise awareness and involvement in growing food.
Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF) promotes the change in the legal status of nonhuman animals in American society and abroad, advocates for the establishment of animal rights to life and bodily integrity, and works to end exploitation of all nonhuman animals.
Students for Education and Animal Liberation (SEAL) is a group on a mission to bring awareness through education to the student body and surrounding community on issues concerning animal rights and animal suffering in today's society.
Oxfam @ NYU works to spread awareness in the areas of global hunger, social justice, poverty, and Fair Trade.
The Gallatin Consciousness is an exciting, ever-shifting network of students that facilitates the synthesis of interdisciplinary ideas and pursuits on the common ground of the creative process and conscious experience, by providing enjoyable, stimulating programming that integrates a vast array of interests. Students and faculty can meet and discuss neglected issues and make connections with each other in order to achieve their personal goals. The organization exists to explore the nature of consciousness in all modes of experience.
Students Creating Radical Change is committed to finding alternatives to violence in solving world conflict, ending racist scapegoating and the attack on civil liberties, opposing the daily degradation of all oppressed peoples, countering the misinformation of the corporate media, and fighting for global economic justice.
College Democrats have helped to organize many events raising awareness and highlighting the role of government in environmental policy.
Green Development Club (GDC, NYU Real Estate Institute) provides students with the opportunity to meet others interested in the booming industry of Green Building. The committee promotes the sharing of ideas related to sustainable development, getting to know active professionals in the industry and learning more about the future of going "Green".
