Off the Grid 2008: Earth Week Kickoff Concert

An outdoor music festival run "off-the-grid" with bio-diesel energy, featuring the bands Mission of Burma, Revision, The Amygdaloids, and TreeUnion! Boating n' Breakfast

VIP DAY 2008

9:00 AM - NOON
Join students, staff and neighbors for the annual springtime spruce-up in Washington Square Park. Pitch in to make the accessible areas of WSP beautiful and ready for spring and summer fun. Volunteers will be painting railings, light posts and filling new planters with flowers. Volunteer for an hour or stay the whole morning. All participants will receive an EarthWeek08 t-shirt.

Volunteer Opportunity: Furnish A Future

9:00 AM - 1:30 PM
Furnish a Future is New York City's only free furniture bank, which collects tons of new and used furniture and household items from businesses and private homes for distribution to formerly homeless families. Since 1992, they have helped more than 22,000 families turn bare rooms into comfortable homes. FaF provides more than practical help - they bring pride, permanence and peace of mind. Volunteers will be organizing donated furniture and other household items.

Volunteer Opportunity: Materials for the Arts

12:30 PM - 5:00 PM
Materials for the Arts provides free supplies to 3,110 arts programs and is the largest provider of art supplies to NYC public schools. Materials are gathered from companies that no longer need them and then distributed to non-profit organizations for reuse. In 2005, 757 tons of materials, valued at over $5.3 million, were kept out of landfills and distributed to non-profit arts organizations, public schools and social, health and community service organizations with arts programs.

Hiking: Appalachian Celebration from the Station

8:30 AM - 6:00 PM
Join eco-Broome for an Appalachian Hike through the Pawling Nature Reserve. We'll take Metro North right to the trail, spend the day hiking through the gorgeous mountains, pick up unsightly litter as we go, and eat lunch at a beautiful clearing overlooking the park. We'll bring some snacks, but pack a bag lunch and dress ready to hike the mountains. Meet at Broome Street Residence Hall, 400 Broome Street. Swap-O-Rama-Rama-Sunday

Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a clothing swap and series of do-it-yourself workshops which features creative reuse through the recycling of used clothing. Bring a bag of old clothing, all of your creative juices, and get ready to swap and alter with the help of local artists. The afternoon will include: a sewing area and decoration station where you can learn to embroider, knit, crochet, and silkscreen; an all-day participatory fashion runway featuring both the silly and the sophisticated; and a showcase of AuH2O designs by Kate Goldwater! (ADMISSION WITH NYU ID: Free with a bag of clothes; ADMISSION FOR NON-NYU: $10 with a bag of clothes)
