Questions about filling out the application/payment:
- Do I need to submit a payment with my application?
All applicants must submit either full payment or a minimum payment equal to the cost of three weeks of housing and, if applicable, dining charges with the application. When applying online, applicants can submit payment online by credit card or checking account debit. Applicants who wish to pay by money order or international check may submit payment by sending payment along with a printed application confirmation within one week of application submission. - Can I send the application in now and make payment at a later date?
No. Applications submitted without a minimum three-week payment, will not be processed. - If I submit the three week minimum payment with my application, when is the rest of my payment for Summer Housing due?
If you choose to submit the three week minimum payment with your application, the balance must be paid in full by the first Friday following your Sunday check-in. - If I authorized full payment when I submitted my Summer Housing Application, can I call and ask that it be changed to the minimum payment?
No. Payment amounts cannot be changed once they have been processed by the Office of Summer Housing. - Do I pay the 'Enrolled' rate or the 'Associate' rate?
In order to be eligible to receive the 'enrolled" rate, an applicant must be registered in an NYU summer course for one (1) or more credits and must complete that course. If you are not registered for summer courses at NYU, or if you are registered for a non-credit summer course at NYU, you must pay the 'associate' rate. For additional information, please click here. - I’m not sure if I’m taking a class for credit or not. What should I put on the application?
If you believe you will be taking a summer course at NYU for credit, you may apply and pay at the enrolled rate. NYU will verify your enrollment in early July. If you have not registered for an NYU summer course for credit, or have failed to complete a course for credit, you will be re-charged at the associate rate.
Questions about Dates:
- I’m not sure how many weeks I need to stay. What should I put on the application?
It is recommended that you request the maximum number of weeks you think you will need. It is easier to reduce the length of your reservation since we cannot guarantee that we will be able to add on the weeks that you request due to space limitations. For information about date changes, click here. - Can I arrive on a day other than Sunday?
Yes, you can check in any day of the week your reservation begins, however, if you are going to check-in on more than four days (Thursday) after your reservation is scheduled to begin, you must notify the Residence Hall Operations Manager of your assigned residence hall. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of your reservation as a “no-show” and the assessment of a cancellation penalty. - What do I do if I can’t arrive the week I’m scheduled to arrive?
You must notify NYU Summer Housing in writing. If this notification is received seven (7) days prior to your scheduled check-in date, the charge will be removed for the week(s) you are removing from the reservation. If notification is received less than seven (7) days before your arrival date, your arrival date will be updated in our database, but the charge for that week will remain assessed to your account. For more information, please click here. - Can I change my dates after I arrive?
Yes. All date adjustments must be made in writing, by mail or by fax, at least seven (7) days prior to the date of the beginning week that is being added or removed from the existing reservation. This change request should be submitted to the Summer Housing Office. All dates changes submitted after April 19th will be subject to a $25 processing fee. For additional information, please click here. - Is there a fee for changing my dates?
If you change the dates of your reservation on or before April 20th, there is no fee. After April 19th, all date changes (which includes extending, reducing, or changing the dates of your reservation) will be subject to a $25 processing fee. - Can I extend past the final week of Summer Housing?
No. August 8th is the final day of Summer Housing. Only academic year NYU students with a confirmed reservation for Fall 2009 housing may remain past August 8th. Please note, academic year NYU students studying abroad for Fall 2009 must check out by August 8th. - I’m scheduled to check out on Saturday, but my plane leaves on Sunday. Is it possible to stay an extra night?
No. If you stay one day beyond your official check-out date, you will be charged for another week’s reservation.
Questions about assignments and checking-in:
- Can I find out my room number before I arrive?
No. Room assignments are made just prior to each resident’s arrival, and specific room assignments and roommate/suitemate information is not available until check-in. - If I am assigned to a "single", does that mean I’ll be living alone? Can I get a room with a private bath?
No. Single occupancy means that you will have your own private bedroom but will share a bathroom and kitchen (in apartment-style halls) with suitemates. The only exception to this are the rooms at 2nd Street, which are single studio apartments. - Can I request a change in my building or room-type assignment before I arrive?
Yes. Once you receive your assignment packet, which confirms your building and room-type assignment, you may submit a written request to the Office of Summer Housing asking for a change. However, changes are based on availability and, if space is becomes limited, Summer Housing may not begin to review change requests until after the March 28th application deadline. - If, after I've checked in, I request a building change and it’s approved, do I have to move or can I change my mind and stay where I am?
Once your building change has been approved and processed, you are required move on the date designated. Failure to do so may result in your account being charged for both spaces. - Do I have to pay a fee to request a building change?
No. Summer Housing does not charge a fee for requesting or making building changes. However, if you are requesting a change from one building-type to another (e.g. traditional to apartment-style hall) or from a shared room to a single room, there may be an increase in the cost of housing per week. If you are requesting a change that involves a higher weekly cost, your request must include full payment for the additional charges. - How are the rooms furnished? What do I need to bring?
All residents are provided with a long twin-sized bed, mattress, desk, chair, and dresser. For additional information, please click here. - What time can I check in to my building?
The earliest you may check-in is 9:00 a.m. on the Sunday of the week your reservation begins. - Can I still check in if I’m arriving late in the evening?
If you are checking in after 8:00 PM, you should contact the residence hall you are checking into directly prior to your check-in. - Can I have packages sent to me at my residence hall before I have arrived?
No mail/packages will be accepted for any resident before he or she has officially checked in at the residence hall. For additional information, please click here. - My son/daughter is attending the CAP 21 Program/ Joffrey Ballet Program. Is he/she eligible to apply for housing?
Yes. Anyone aged 17 and over on the date their reservation begins is eligible to apply. Priority, however, is given to applicants who are registered for NYU courses. All others will be housed on a "first come, first served" basis. - My internship begins on May 18, can I check in on May 17?
No. Only applicants registered for NYU summer courses beginning on May 18th and continuing spring residents may check on May 17. All other applicants may check-in beginning May 24.
Questions about roommates/suitemates
- What are the procedures for requesting a roommate or suitemate?
The process for requesting to live with someone is explained here. Each applicant is only permitted to request up to three people that they wish to live with. - Can I find out who my roommate is before I arrive?
No. Because room assignments are made just prior to check-in, roommate information will not be available until you've arrived. - If I don’t get along with my roommate/suitemates, can I change rooms?
It may be possible, depending on space availability. To request a change to another room within your current hall, contact the staff in your residence hall office. Requests to change to different types of rooms (e.g. from shared rooms to single rooms) must be submitted in writing to the Office of Summer Housing. - If my roommate and I are not placed in the same suite/room, can we be moved to a new room or building where we can live together?
If you are not placed with your requested roommate, it may be because there were no whole open rooms available for you and your roommate the week that you checked in. You should speak to the residence hall staff about the possibility of making a room change in the future. Changes, if possible, will be based on availability and are not guaranteed. To request a move to another hall, submit a written request (signed by both roommate requests) to the Office of Summer Housing. For additional information, click here. - Can males/females live in the same room/suite?
No. All of our residence halls are coed, but rooms/suites are same-sex only.
Questions about the meal plan:
- Am I required to have a meal plan?
Only if you are assigned to a traditional hall (Brittany, Goddard, Hayden or Rubin Halls). Meal Plans are optional for residents living in apartment-style housing. - Can I sign up for a meal plan after I arrive?
Yes. You can sign up for a meal plan at any time at NYU Summer Housing. Please note that you must pay in full for the meal plan at the time you purchase the meal plan. - Can I cancel my meal plan after I arrive?
Yes. If you are living in apartment-style housing and decide you do not want a meal plan, you may cancel it by submitting a written request to the Office of Summer Housing. The cancellation will be effective the first Sunday following the date the request is received. Residents of traditional style housing (Brittany, Goddard, Hayden and Rubin Halls) cannot cancel their meal plan. For additional information, please click here. - Can I get a refund for the weeks I didn’t use my meal plan?
No. Refunds cannot be made on unused meals. In addition, unused meals do not carry over week to week. - What are Dining Dollars?
In addition to a meal allowance, each meal plan comes with a weekly Dining Dollar amount (depending on which meal plan you purchase, you will receive $30, $25 or $20 Dining Dollars per week). This meal plan component works on the same principle as debit cards. The amount of your purchase is subtracted from the balance in your account. You can use your Dining Dollars in all NYU dining locations to purchase beverages, snacks or additional meals. Unlike the weekly meal allowance, unused Dining Dollars do carry over from week to week until your meal plan ends. For more information, please click here. - Can I receive a refund for any Dining Dollars that I did not use by the end of my reservation?
No. Unused Dining Dollars are not refundable.
