Cultural Capital: Media and Arts in New York City
New York is arguably the cultural capital of the world. NYU’s Cultural Capital program is an exciting new offering designed to enrich your summer experience and deepen your understanding of the intersection of media, culture, economics, and the arts. You will get a head start on building your arts and media network.
Program Dates:
Monday, July 2 - Friday, August 10, 2012
Program Details:
Cultural Capital is ideal for students exploring opportunities for a career in media, communication, the arts or arts management. Applicants must be currently enrolled college students. The registration form is now available.
The program is built around a 4-credit core course, Cultural Capital: Media and the Arts in NYC (MCC-UE 1152), which explores the multi-faceted nature of New York City as a cultural and economic hub for media and the arts. The program asks questions such as:
- How did New York City become a media magnet?
- What drives the economics of the media and arts industries?
- How do media and the arts shape the work and leisure of city life?
- How do they contribute to the city’s position in the global circuit of ideas, people, and the creative industries?
To investigate these questions, in-class instruction will be complemented by exclusive access to high-level guest presentations and site vists to:
• Times Square: Media Spectacle and Live Entertainment
• Museum of Modern Art: Art and the Mid-Century Making of a Global City
• Bloomberg: the Nexus of Media and Financial Services
• City Hall: The MediaNYC 2020 Plan
• Silicon Alley: Finding “New Media” in Old New York
• Time – Warner: Making Content
• Madison Ave: the Mad Men (and Women) of Manhattan
In addition, participants can choose a second credit-bearing course from a carefully selected range of offerings. View the list of course descriptions here to learn more about these courses.
