Intensive Elementary German
GERM-UA 9010 – Staff – 6 points
Identical with GERM-UA 10

Open to students with no previous training in German and to others on assignment by placement examination or with permission of the department. Completes the equivalent of a year's elementary work (GERM-UA 1 and GERM-UA 2) in one semester. Emphasizes spoken and written communication skills. Introduces students to the basic conventions, idioms, and structures of contemporary spoken German.

GERM-UA 9010 MUST BE TAKEN TOGETHER WITH GERM-UA 9990.

Independent Study
GERM-UA 9990 – Staff – 2 points

Provides students enrolled in Intensive Elementary German with an opportunity to practice their newly acquired language skills through individual or small group conversation with native speakers and everyday-life challenges like shopping.

Elementary German II

A continuation of Elementary German I.
Prerequisite: Elementary German I or equivalent.

Intermediate German I
GERM-UA 9003 – Staff – 4 points

This first intermediate course stresses the acquisition and practice of more sophisticated written and spoken German. The focus is on expanding conversational skills, but the course also includes guided composition practice, vocabulary work, and grammar review. Open to students who have completed the equivalent of one year of elementary language instruction and to others on assignment by placement examination. Conducted in German.

German Conversation and Composition

Exploring Historical and Contemporary Berlin
GERM-UA 9293 – Jander – 4 points View Syllabus
Cross listed with SOC-UA 9460 and HIST-UA 9460.
Examines the legacy of post-war division (1945-1989) through visits to sites in both formerly communist East Berlin and non-communist West Berlin. Explores the cosmopolitan reality of contemporary Berlin through trips to diverse neighborhoods and discussions with community representatives and public officials.

Comparative Modern Societies: Holocaust and Third Reich in Berlin
SOC-UA 9133 – Ertman – 4 points View Syllabus
Cross listed with HIST-UA 9133 and POL-UA 9133.
Explores the remnants of Hitler’s capital and the crimes planned within it through visits to historical sites in contemporary Berlin including the former Luftwaffe and Propaganda ministries, the 1936 Olympics Complex, the Wannsee Conference villa, Plφtzensee prison, Sachsenhausen concentration camp, and several surviving bunker complexes. Readings will include diaries and memoirs of life in Berlin between 1933 and 1945.

PLEASE NOTE: All students participating in the program are required to live in NYU-provided housing. Students are billed a standard housing rate in the spring. Housing charges will be adjusted at the end of the program based on actual housing assignments, which may result in an additional charge or credit issued in the late summer.
