H56.1083 002 Special Effects Makeup for Film and Television

Description

This is an introductory level hands-on workshop designed for students wishing to develop their artistry, experienced make-up artists seeking advanced techniques, non-make-up artists just starting out, and anyone who has always wondered “how’d they do that?” This course explores the art of special effects make-up. Topics include history of make-up in cinema; anatomical reference; visualizing an effect; lighting for make-up; safety using materials; sculpting, molding and applying prosthetics; creating silicone molds; the role and responsibility of the make-up artist; graphic violence simulation; skin safe molding procedures; “out-of-kit” make-up effects including bruises, black eyes, blood, scabs, scars, wounds, burns, and decayed flesh; applying, blending, and coloring a bald cap; and applying, blending and coloring a foam latex prosthetic. Make-up effects in live action film, stop motion animation, the digital realm, theatre, and photography is also discussed. Students receive a make-up kit specially designed with all materials necessary to complete in-class projects. No artistic background required.

Robert Benevides is a full time faculty member and graduate of the Department of Film and Television at Tisch School of the Arts. He has worked extensively as a professional special effects make-up artist for feature films and television.
