Undergraduate Language Courses

Undergraduate students must register for 8 points. Students may either register for one language course and one content course or register for two content courses.

Elementary Chinese I
V33.9201 - Peking University faculty - 4 points
Open to students with no previous training in Chinese. Conducted in Chinese.

Introductory course in modern Chinese. Covers both spoken and written aspects of the language. The course introduces Pinyin, the phonetic system in Mandarin Chinese, and the fundamentals of the Chinese writing system and provides ample opportunity to practice conversation through real-life situations. A basic study of elementary Chinese grammar in modern Chinese is also included.

Elementary Chinese II

Prerequisite for NYU students: V33.0201 or equivalent. Conducted in Chinese.

Continuation from Elementary Chinese I. Reinforces and develops language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing as it relates to everyday life situations.

Intermediate Chinese I

Prerequisite for NYU students: V33.0202 or permission of the program Director. Conducted in Chinese.

A continuing study of Chinese at the intermediate level. The course focuses on the four aspects of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It trains students to be familiar with the written language and prepares them to read original Chinese texts in different styles in addition to learning grammar and basic proficiency skills.

Intermediate Chinese II

Prerequisite for NYU students: V33.0203 or equivalent. Conducted in Chinese.

Continuation from Intermediate Chinese I. Consolidates aural-oral proficiency. Focuses increasingly on developing reading and writing competence as it relates to written Chinese.

Advanced Chinese I
V33.9205 - Liao - 4 points
Prerequisite for NYU students: V33.0204 or permission of the program Director. Conducted in Chinese.

Reading and translation of modern and/or classical Chinese texts in the humanities and literature. The course is intended to develop reading speed and comprehension of more advanced syntax and styles.

Reading in Chinese Culture I - COURSE CANCELLED

Topics in Contemporary Chinese Culture and Society

Conducted in English.

This course is taught by an NYU member and some classes will be led by guest-speakers. Topics of inquiry range from Chinese economy and public policy to China's relations to the outside world to critical issues on Chinese education, law and society, labor's and women's rights, youth culture, mass media, and literary production.

Reading Beijing

Conducted in English.
This course does not count towards the major or minor. Can be taken for elective credits.

This course, designed specifically for participants in the NYU in Beijing program, is a study of Beijing's historical importance at different key periods of Chinese history. Field trips, lectures, class discussion, and films are used to provide the students with a rich and concrete sense of the city as well as its importance to the Chinese nation. The goal is to familiarize students with the key sites of this historic city and to inform them of the role the city has played in different historical periods, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries.
