Content Courses Conducted in English

Topics: Barcelona: The City and Its History
G42.9901 UPF faculty - 4 points

Once labeled by Newsweek magazine as the "coolest city in Europe," Barcelona is a cosmopolitan city with a lively international vibe. Like all places, however, it is not without its ambiguities. Behind a glossy and tourist-friendly faade lurks a complex history. This course introduces the student to the city of Barcelona by studying its past and analyzing its present. We review the history of Barcelona through its urban and architectural landscape and engage in critical analysis of the clichs and generalizations that have crept into contemporary urban discourse. We also discuss issues relevant to people living within the city of Barcelona today. The course consists of a mixture of lectures, discussions, and field studies.

The European Union: History and Politics
G42.9502 UPF faculty - 4 points

If you had predicted, 60 years ago, that in six decades, Europe would look the way it does today, you would likely have been laughed out of the room. Since then, however, Europe has changed fundamentally, perhaps almost beyond the recognition of those emerging from the Second World War. Not only is war between European states today almost inconceivable, but a set of institutions and practices has developed that tie Europeans into an ever-closer union. The lively empirical and theoretical debates about how best to describe and explain European integration are the objects of our study in this course.
