getting involved

Student government is all about you — the students. Your participation is crucial to the success of the student government organization as a whole. We've listed some ways you can get involved:

1

Attend student council meetings. Check with your school's council for dates, times, and locations. And attend UCSL meetings. Visit the "Meetings" page for dates, times, and locations.

2

Run for student council. Elections for freshmen (or 1st year) positions are usually held early during the fall semester. Elections for positions for the upcoming academic year are held in the spring, usually during the election period coordinated by the UCSL. Check with your school's council for information about your school's election procedures.

3 Apply to be a Student Senator-at-Large. While most Student Senators are elected from their school, each year 7 Student Senators-at-Large are appointed for the purpose of providing continuity and representing underrepresented interests. The application process takes place during the spring semester each academic year. Check back for more information.

4 Stay informed. Read the Washington Square News and NYU Today and watch for newsletters published by your school's student council.

5 Let your elected representatives know what's on your mind. Visit the "Contact Us" page to find out how to get in touch with us.

6 Speak up! Each year the SSC and UCSL host a "Soap Box Forum." Visit the "Events" page for the date, time, and location. If you're involved in club life, the SAB and ASSBAC host "Town Hall Meetings." Watch for information about those. Visit the "Meetings" and "Contact Us" pages for additional opportunities to communicate with your representatives.

7 Join a UCSL committee. While the membership of most committees is restricted to elected student representatives, some committees are open to members of the student body. Contact the UCSL for more information.

8 If you're involved in club life, join the SAB. The members of the SAB, who are appointed by the UCSL, are drawn, in part, from club leaders. The application process usually takes place during the spring semester (although vacancies may be filled at other times). Watch for information.

9 Vote!!! Need we say more. Elections for positions for the upcoming academic year are held in the spring, usually during the election period coordinated by the UCSL. Elections for freshmen (or 1st year) positions are usually held early during the fall semester. Visit the "Events" page for the dates of this year's Coordinated Election Period.
