overview
Student government begins at the school
level. Each school or college has its own student
council. Student council presidents come together with the elected
and appointed Student Senators from each school to form the SSCs
University Committee on Student Life which makes recommendations to
the Student Senators Council. The Student Senators
Council, in turn, makes recommendations to the University
Senate, of which it is a constituent body, and/or the University Administration.
Following is a description of each of these bodies.
student
senators council (ssc)
The Student Senators Council (SSC) considers
matters in which the interests, rights, or responsibilities of students
are involved and takes special responsibility in bringing student concerns
to the attention of the University Senate. The SSC is made up of 15 Student
Senators elected by the students of the various schools and colleges of
NYU and 7 Student Senators appointed at-large by the Executive Committee
of the University Senate with the advice and consent of the elected Student
Senators. These at-large Senators provide continuity and represent underrepresented
interests.
sscs
university committee on student life (ucsl)
The principal committee of the Student
Senators Council is the University Committee on Student Life (UCSL), the
broadest based student government group at the University. The UCSL, which
is concerned with University-wide issues, oversees the general quality
of student life and transmits policy recommendations to the SSC. While
mainly a deliberative body, the UCSL exercises certain "legislative" and
administrative functions through some of its more important committees.
Working with the student councils, the UCSL also helps to organize University-wide
events such as the Violet Ball, the Book Fairs, the All-University Games,
a University-wide coordinated election period, and Senior Week. The UCSL
consists of the entire SSC, the presidents of the various student councils,
the chair of the Student Activities Board (SAB), the chair of the Inter-Residence
Hall Council (IRHC), the chair of the Inter-Greek Council (IGC), and one
representative each from the Faculty Senators Council, the Deans Council,
and the Division of Student Affairs.
ssc/ucsl
committees
SSC/UCSL members serve on a number of committees,
some of which are described below. Student leaders are also invited to
serve on many University-wide committees.
The Committee on Academic Services discusses issues concerning
Bobst Library, student/faculty relations, computers, classroom facilities,
the academic calendar, etc.
The All-Square Student Budget Allocation Committee (ASSBAC) serves
as the mechanism through which funds are allocated to All-Square student
organizations. (For more information, visit the "Clubs"
page.)
The External Affairs Committee considers all matters relating to
the SSC/UCSL's association with external organizations, such as, but not
limited to, other colleges and universities.
The Committee on Graduate Affairs considers matters relating to
the academic and extracurricular life of students enrolled in the graduate
and professional schools and serves as an advocate, without regard to
school affiliation, for such students on issues which affect them as a
distinct and identifiable entity within the University community, and
acts as a liaison with the various graduate and professional school student
councils.
The Inter-Residence Hall Council (IRHC) coordinates the activities
of the undergraduate residence hall councils and works with the Department
of Residential Education to improve the quality of residential life at
the University. (For more information, visit the "Residents"
page.)
The Inter-Greek Council (IGC) is an umbrella organization responsible
for considering matters regarding recognized fraternities and sororities.
(For more information, visit the "Greeks"
page.)
The Student Activities Board (SAB) grants All-Square status, monitors
the development of student organizations and develops procedures for club
registration. (For more information, visit the "Clubs"
page.)
The Student Affairs Budget Advisory Committee (SABAC) makes recommendations
concerning the budget and policies of the Division of Student Affairs
and allocates contingency funds to the student councils.
The Committee on Student Services considers non-academic matters
relating to the general well-being of students at NYU such as campus transportation,
disabled student services, international students services, space, etc.
The Committee also works with the Student Health Advisory Board, the Recreation
Committee/Coles Advisory Board, and the Food Advisory Board.
The Food Advisory Board works in conjunction with representatives
from campus dining services and considers matters relating to the quality
of food services at NYU, and makes recommendations concerning policy,
nutrition, and services.
The Recreation Committee considers matters relating to the development
of policy, facilities, and services at the Coles Sports Center and consists
of students who also serve on the Coles Advisory Board.
The Student Health Advisory Board considers all matters relating
to the University Health Center.
The Committee on Undergraduate Affairs considers matters that relate
to the extracurricular life of students enrolled in the undergraduate
divisions of the University. The Committee may consider issues such as
strengthening a sense of community among undergraduates, coordinating
all-University undergraduate programming, etc.
The Committee on Alumni Relations considers issues concerning the
relationship between current students and alumni.
student
councils
The SSC and UCSL are concerned with matters
that involve students of more than one school or college. However, each
of the various schools and colleges has its own student council which
represents its students to the faculty and administration within that
school. Each council also provides a range of services and activities,
both academic and extracurricular, and may fund student organizations
whose membership is exclusively from that school. There are many opportunities
to get involved through your school's council.
university
senate
The University Senate, chaired by the
President, is the chief deliberative body of the University for the discussion
of all matters of University policy and practice in cases in which two
or more schools have a substantial interest. For example, the Senate is
empowered to set each year's academic calendar and discuss certain University-wide
policies. The Senate's membership consists of the Faculty
Senators Council (35), the Deans Council (15), the Student Senators
Council (22), not more than 5 representatives of the Administrative
Management Council, and not more than 5 officers of University administration,
including the President, the Chancellor of the University and Executive
Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Executive Vice President for
Health Affairs, the Secretary, and such other officers as may from time
to time be designated by the President.
