Lecture Series: The 21st Century Entrepreneur: Spotlight on China

Over the course of the semester this once-a-week lecture series examines some of the common attributes amongst the successful entrepreneurs worldwide. All NYU in Shanghai students are invited to participate in the series, regardless of their course of study. Prominent global business leaders visit the NYU in Shanghai campus each week to allow students an intimate understanding of the fundamental building blocks and key ingredients in starting a business, building an enterprise and sustaining a corporation. Guest speakers with years of diverse experiences offer insight into doing in business in China. The series requires the interactive participation of students as they work in teams throughout the semester to develop a professional business proposal drawing on lecture materials, case studies, class discussions and on-site company visits. At the end of the semester groups compete in a simulated real-life fund-raising presentation before a small select group of “mock” investment committee members. Speakers have included CEOs of publicly listed companies, prominent consultants, business executives, marketers and many others. An optional overnight fieldtrip that includes visits with government officials and business heads may also be offered as a part of the lecture series.

Business in Shanghai

A key feature of the academic program at NYU in Shanghai is the business curriculum, designed to make the adventure of study abroad possible for students meeting the heavy demands of a business major. The business program at NYU in Shanghai  includes courses that are all standard sophomore and junior core subjects at most U.S. business schools, allowing students to maintain progress toward their degree while experiencing the diverse challenges and fresh perspectives that international study offers. The curriculum takes advantage of the industrial and commercial power of China, and Shanghai in particular as many faculty are local business leaders with years of experience in a variety of different industries.

Internships are available in areas such as marketing, engineering, investing, television production, magazine editorial, advertising, event management and education among others to supplement business courses and add a further dimension to your studies abroad. Many of the organizations seeking interns are foreign-based and do not require advanced Mandarin language proficiency, although it is appreciated.

All courses are overseen by and meet the rigorous standards of the faculty of NYU's world-renowned Leonard N. Stern School of Business. The Stern School's programs in finance and in international business-both ranked second in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in 2004—are well represented here, as are courses in accounting.
