Welcome to NYU Study Abroad! We’re delighted that you’ll be spending the fall semester with us and can’t wait to greet you in London. In the meantime, this page will guide you through everything you need to get ready for your term abroad. Your acceptance letter will mirror this list very closely, so please be sure to use that as an additional reference.

By the time you've visited this site, we're assuming that you've already been admitted to the Fall in London Freshman Program and gotten (or renewed) your passport. If you haven't, please check your acceptance email for details on those two very important preliminary steps.  What follows may seem a bit overwhelming at first glance, but we've broken it down into these easy-to-follow instructions.

Here’s what’s next:

Reserve Your Space

June 15th - but the earlier the better!

Once you have submitted your online application for the Fall Freshman Program in London you’ll receive an admissions decision via email. If you have been admitted and would like to attend you’ll need to submit a confirmation/registration form and non-refundable deposit to our office by June 15th to reserve your spot in the program. Please include a check made out to New York University in the amount of $300. This payment will be credited towards your tuition.

Please note that although the final deposit deadline is June 15th, depositing allows NYU to register you for courses. Admittance into courses is available on a first come, first serve basis.

Book Your Flight

Submit your flight information and arrival form by June 30th.

We provide you with information on discount flights in your acceptance packet or via a subsequent e-mail. You can research your own flights as well, but we hope it gives you a sense of what's available. If you choose to book a seat on the flight you’ll travel with other students in the program, and transportation from the London airport to your residence will be available upon arrival. You’re under no obligation to use the flight that we suggest, so please feel free to research flights on your own if you’d like.

As a condition of the UK student visa, students may not enter the UK more than seven (7) days prior to the start of the NYU in London semester. Additionally, students must leave the UK within seven (7) days after the semester ends.

Apply for (or renew) Your Passport

ASAP

If you need a new passport, please consider using the expedited service. The regular service may take up to seven or eight weeks leaving you without enough time to obtain a student visa. For more information on getting or renewing your passport, please visit the Department of State’s travel website.  Please note that the British government requires that your passport be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned return from study abroad. The government retains the right to deny you entry into the UK if your passport is not valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned return, so make sure to renew it now.

Get Your Student Visa (if you require one)

ASAP

If you’re a US citizen, a student visa is required to study in London for a single semester. Please read over the instructions below to learn more about immigration and entry requirements. If you are not a US citizen, you should check the web site of the US British Embassy to learn whether you will require a visa. If you find that you do, please contact our office at (212) 998-4433 and identify yourself as part of the Fall in London Freshman Program.

Unfortunately, NYU does not have the ability to change visa requirements, nor does it help if we call consulates or embassies on your behalf. Though we're happy to help you in whatever way we can, the decision to issue you a visa rests solely with the consulate or embassy. Below you'll find important instructions for getting your visa.

Instructions

Consulates

As a condition of the UK student visa, students may not enter the UK more than seven (7) days prior to the start of the NYU in London semester. Additionally, students must leave the UK within seven (7) days after the semester ends.

Activate and Update NYU Home

As soon as you are granted access

NYUHome (http://home.nyu.edu) is an excellent resource which provides you with an NYU email address, information on your bursar account and access to Blackboard where you’ll be able to access a bunch of information we’ve put together on London for you to read before you leave. You'll be cleared to access NYUHome approximately five days after your deposit confirming your place in the program is received. Once you have access to NYUHome, please make sure to update your addresses and phone numbers in our system—that ensures that we’re able to contact you with important information, including essential mailings as we’ll use the contact information you provide there. You can find instructions on how to start using NYUHome's basic functions here.

Fill Out a Housing Questionnaire

June 30th

You'll get the chance to answer a few questions about your living style (like maybe you stay up late, prefer quiet study at home, or are a strict vegetarian) to pair you up with like-minded roommates. Please note that you will be filling out the same housing application that all students studying at NYU in London use. The housing questionnaire is part of the on-line forms system. Please scroll down for more information regarding on-line forms.   All first year students will be housed with other first year students in NIDO, which has 24 hour security. Please note that housing at NYU in London is both required and guaranteed.

Register for Classes

Submit your Confirmation/Registration Form by June 15th - but the earlier the better!

In your acceptance e-mail you were provided with a link to a confirmation/registration form, which you must complete and send to the NYU Office of Global Programs with your $300 deposit check. Once we have received this form with your deposit, NYU will be able to confirm you in the program and register you for classes. NYU will work hard to place you in your top choices, as long as space remains available in those courses. Please keep in mind that access into a course will be granted in a first come, first serve basis. You can access a list of pre-approved courses here. You must register for 16 points no later than July 1st.

Submit Required Forms

June 30th

Our online forms system allows you to submit information about your flight, passport, health insurance, and emergency contacts quickly and conveniently. There are only two required paper forms you must submit--Travel Release and NYU Health History. You can access Web forms and the Travel Release via the links below. The Health History form will be sent to you from the NYU Health Center and will need to be returned to the NYU Health Center no later than June 30th. Your NYU Health History form may require a visit to your physician, so please plan ahead.

Review Blackboard and Pre-departure Materials

Mid-summer

To prepare you for your semester and answer some questions you might have about life in London we'll have a powerpoint presentation linked to here.

In addition you should review the information contained in the London Blackboard section on NYUHome which will also answer many of the questions you may have about your fall semester abroad. You can find blackboard by clicking on the "academics" tab once you're logged into NYUHome and then locating the link on that page.

Also, remember that you can always email the staff in London at any time at freshmen.in.london@nyu.ac.uk.
