Welcome to NYU Study Abroad! We’re delighted that you’ll be spending next year with us and can’t wait to greet you in Florence. In the meantime, this page will guide you through everything you need to get ready for your term abroad. We’ve mirrored the acceptance letter very closely, so please be sure to use that as an additional reference.

By the time you've visited this site, we're assuming that you've already been admitted to and confirmed your place in the Liberal Studies Freshman Year in Florence program. If you haven't, please check your acceptance materials for details on this important preliminary step. What follows may seem a bit overwhelming at first glance, but we've broken it down into these easy-to-follow instructions.

Here’s what’s next:

Apply for or Renew Your Passport

ASAP

U.S. citizens, please visit the Department of State’s travel website for more information on getting or renewing your passport. Please note that the Italian government requires that your passport be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned return from study abroad. The government retains the right to deny you entry into Italy if your passport is not valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned return (August 2010), so make sure to renew it now.

Return Your Liberal Studies in Florence Form

June 1st.

Please be sure to fill out and return the Liberal Studies in Florence information form that you will receive via e-mail. Keep in mind that the information included on this form is very important so the sooner you return it to our office, the better.

Get Your Student Visa

Ongoing, but the earlier the better. Start the process now!

Unfortunately, NYU does not have the ability to change visa requirements, nor does it help if we call consulates or embassies on your behalf. Though we're happy to help you in whatever way we can, the decision to issue you a visa rests solely with the consulate or embassy. Below you'll find instructions for getting your visa, along with sample visa applications and supporting materials.

Applying for your Visa?

  • NYC Italian Consulate Student Visa Instructions (revised for fall 2009 students)
  • Miami Italian Consulate Student Visa Instructions (revised for fall 2009 students)
  • San Francisco Italian Consulate Student Visa Instructions (revised for fall 2009 students)
  • Information for European Union Citizens (updated for Academic Year 2009-2010)
  • Consulates and Applications

    Supporting Documentation

**If you are not an American citizen, please contact your local Italian consulate or embassy for information on applying for your entry documentation.**

    Supporting Documentation

    Permesso di Soggiorno

Italy law requires you register with them upon arrival.  Please read the list below of required materials for the residency permit or Permesso di Soggiorno It is very important that you do not lose these documents, so make sure to put them in your carry-on luggage when you travel to Italy!  There are additional steps to complete once you’re in Florence, but the staff will advise you of these when you arrive. Please note that you must arrive in Florence on the official arrival date otherwise you may have to go through the on-site immigration process without staff assistance.

Students that applied through NYU: all materials were sent to the staff but students should make a photocopy of your visa and ID page of your passport for your own records.

If you applied on your own, you will need:

    • One photocopy of your entire passport, cover to cover (that means every page!)
    • Three photocopies of your signature / photo page of your passport
    • Three photocopies of your visa

If you are traveling on an EU passport, you do not have to get a student visa but will still need to proof that you are a NYU student. Make sure you have:

    • Enrollment letter (without the Consulate stamp, obviously)
    • Three copies of the photo page of your valid EU passport

    Update NYUHome

ASAP to ensure that all materials get to you promptly

NYUHome is an excellent resource which provides you with an NYU email address, information on your bursar account and access to Blackboard where you’ll be able to access a bunch of information we’ve put together on Florence for you to read before you leave. Once you have access to NYUHome, please make sure to update your addresses and phone numbers in our system—that ensures that we’re able to contact you with important information, including essential mailings as we’ll use the contact information you provide there. You can find instructions on how to start using NYUHome's basic functions here. Please note that you will not use NYU Home to register for classes and will instead fill out a Course Registration Form that you will receive during the summer.

Note: If you reside at an international address, you will be unable to update your current location through NYUHome.  Instead, you should contact the Registrar’s Office directly at registrar@nyu.edu or 1-212-998-4800 to have your address updated.
