Welcome to NYU Study Abroad! We’re delighted that you’ll be spending the fall semester with us and can’t wait to greet you in Florence. In the meantime, this page will guide you through everything you need to get ready for your term abroad. A checklist in your acceptance packet will mirror this list very closely.

By the time you've visited this site, we're assuming that you've already been admitted to the Fall in Florence Freshman Program and gotten (or renewed) your passport. If you haven't, please check your acceptance materials for details on those two very important preliminary steps.  What follows may seem a bit overwhelming at first glance, but we've broken it down into these easy-to-follow instructions.

Here’s what’s next:

Reserve Your Space

June 15th - but the earlier the better!

Once you have submitted your online application for the Fall in Florence Freshman Program you’ll receive an admissions decision via email. If you have been admitted and would like to attend you’ll need to submit a confirmation form and non-refundable deposit to our office by June 15th to reserve your spot in the program. Please include a check made out to New York University in the amount of $300. This payment will be credited towards your tuition. Please note that although the final deposit deadline is June 15th, your deposit must be received by June 1st in order to clear you for registration at the earliest possible time - June 8th.

Book Your Flight

Submit your flight information online by June 30th.

You are responsible for scheduling your own flight to and from Florence according to the program dates. You should plan to arrive on the morning of arrival day, participation in orientation is mandatory.

Fall Semester 2009
Arrival Day: August 24th, 2009

Apply for (or renew) Your Passport

ASAP

For more information on getting or renewing your passport, please visit the Department of State’s travel website.  Please note that the Italian government requires that your passport be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned return from study abroad. The government retains the right to deny you entry into Italy if your passport is not valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned return, so make sure to renew it now.

Get Your Student Visa (if you require one)

ASAP

If you’re a US citizen, a full student visa is required to study in Florence for a single semester. Please read over the instructions below to learn more about immigration and entry requirements. If you are not a US citizen, you should check the web site of the US Italian Embassy to learn whether you will require a visa. If you find that you do, please contact our office at (212) 998-4433 and identify yourself as part of the Fall in Florence Freshman Program.

NYU does not have the ability to change visa requirements, nor does it help if we call consulates or embassies on your behalf. Though we're happy to help you in whatever way we can, the decision to issue you a visa rests solely with the consulate or embassy. Below you'll find important instructions for getting your visa.

Permesso di Soggiorno

Italy law requires you register with them upon arrival.  Please read the list below of required materials for the residency permit or Permesso di Soggiorno It is very important that you do not lose these documents, so make sure to put them in your carry-on luggage when you travel to Italy!  There are additional steps to complete once you’re in Florence, but the staff will advise you of these when you arrive. Please note that you must arrive in Florence on the official arrival date otherwise you may have to go through the on-site immigration process without staff assistance.

Students that applied through NYU: all materials were sent to the staff but students should make a photocopy of your visa and ID page of your passport for your own records.

If you applied on your own, you will need:

  • One photocopy of your entire passport, cover to cover (that means every page!)
  • Three photocopies of your signature / photo page of your passport
  • Three photocopies of your visa

If you are traveling on an EU passport, you do not have to get a student visa but will still need to proof that you are a NYU student. Make sure you have:

  • Enrollment letter (without the Consulate stamp, obviously)
  • Three copies of the photo page of your valid EU passport

Activate and Update NYU Home

Deadline June 24th

NYUHome (http://home.nyu.edu) is an excellent resource which provides you with an NYU email address, information on your bursar account and access to Blackboard where you’ll be able to access a bunch of information we’ve put together on Florence for you to read before you leave. You'll be cleared to access NYUHome approximately five days after your deposit confirming your place in the program is received. Once you have access to NYUHome, please make sure to update your addresses and phone numbers in our system—that ensures that we’re able to contact you with important information, including essential mailings as we’ll use the contact information you provide there. You can find instructions on how to start using NYUHome's basic functions here. Please note that you will need to use NYUHome in order to register for courses abroad, so once you are able to log in you should familiarize yourself with the system.

Fill Out a Housing Questionnaire

June 24th

You'll get the chance to answer a few questions about your living style (like maybe you stay up late, prefer quiet study at home, or are a strict vegetarian) to pair you up with like-minded roommates. Please note that you will be filling out the same housing application that all students studying at NYU in Florence use. The housing questionnaire is part of the on-line forms system. Please scroll down for more information regarding on-line forms.   All first year students will be housed with other first year students at the NYU in Florence campus, which has 24 hour security. Please note that housing at NYU in Florence is both required and guaranteed.

Register for Classes

Submit Confirmation/Registration Form by June 15th

In your acceptance e-mail you were provided with a link to a confirmation/registration form, which you must complete and send to the NYU Office of Global Programs with your $300 deposit check. Once we have received this form with your deposit, NYU will be able to confirm you in the program and register you for classes. NYU will work hard to place you in your top choices, as long as space remains available in those courses. Please keep in mind that access into a course will be granted in a first come, first serve basis. You must register for 16 points no later than July 1st.

Our online forms system allows you to submit information about your flight, passport, health insurance, and emergency contacts quickly and conveniently. Review Blackboard and Pre-departure Materials

Mid-summer

To prepare you for your semester and answer some questions you might have about life in Florence we'll have a powerpoint presentation linked to here. We'll also have a series of online chats scheduled over the summer where you can meet other students that you'll be studying with this fall as well as ask questions to our staff in Florence about all aspects of life in the Italy.

In addition you should review the information contained in the Florence Blackboard section on NYUHome which will also answer many of the questions you may have about your fall semester abroad. You can find Blackboard by clicking on the "academics" tab once you're logged into NYUHome and then locating the link on that page.
