Welcome to NYU Study Abroad! We’re delighted that you’ll be spending a semester or year with us and can’t wait to greet you in Florence. In the meantime, this page will guide you through everything you need to get ready for your term abroad. We’ve mirrored the acceptance letter very closely, so please be sure to use that as an additional reference.

By the time you've visited this site, we're assuming that you've already reserved your place in NYU Study Abroad and received (or renewed) your passport. If you haven't, please check your acceptance materials for details on those two very important preliminary steps.

Here’s what’s next:

Ongoing, but get started ASAP!

All students attending the NYU in Florence program are required to have proper documentation upon arrival, meaning a student visa or EU passport and supporting materials.  Unfortunately, NYU does not have the ability to change visa requirements, nor does it help if we call consulates or embassies on your behalf. Though we're happy to help you in whatever way we can, the decision to issue you a visa rests solely with the consulate or embassy. Below you'll find instructions for getting your visa, along with sample visa applications and supporting materials.

Visa Application

Applying through NYU
NYU is able to apply on behalf of students applying through NYC, Miami or San Francisco that meet the following requirements:

  • You are a US Citizen
  • You won’t be traveling outside of the US during the time period when we’ll need your passport - approximately December 2nd through January 10th
  • Your permanent home address or current college / university is in the NYC, Miami or San Francisco Consulate’s Jurisdiction (see full list of consulates at Consulate Information).  You will need to show proof of residency with photo ID (driver’s license, school ID, etc.)

If you are eligible it is STRONGLY recommended that you apply through NYU.  If you have any questions about eligibility, please contact our office.

Complete applications are due to the Office of Global Programs by December 2nd at 5pm.  For a full list of requirements, please see Applying Through NYU.

Applying on your own
If you do not meet the requirements listed above, you will be responsible for applying on your own by following the appropriate consulate’s requirements / directions.  For an explanation of commonly required materials, please see Italian Student Visa Terms.

European Union Citizens (EU Passport Holders)
Citizens of countries under the European Union do not need visas for any Schengen Country. The European Union area includes 27 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom.

If traveling on an EU Passport you will still need to bring additional materials to Florence to show proof that you are a student of the program.  See below for requirements.

Consulates and Applications
Each consulate has specific regulations and requirements, so your very first step is to determine which consulates jurisdiction you fall under.  For a full list of Italian Consulate’s please go to Consulate Information

Be sure to check and recheck the consulate requirements before your appointment or submitting materials, as all requirements are subject to change without notification.

If applying through a consulate not listed, please use the sample NYC Consulate Application as a template paying specific attention to visa type and contact information.

Supporting Documentation
Affidavit of Insurance (we buy the required insurance, so just fill this out)
Affidavit of Financial Support
SAMPLE Bank Letter

Permesso di Soggiorno
Italian law requires all students to register within eight days of their student visa start date by applying for the residency permit or Permesso di Soggiorno.  It is very important that you do not lose the required documents, so make sure to put them in your carry-on luggage when you travel to Italy!  There are additional and mandatory steps to complete once you’re in Florence, but the staff will advise you of these when you arrive.
Students that applied through NYU: all materials were sent to the staff in Florence but students should make a photocopy of your visa and ID page of your passport for your own records.
If you applied on your own, you will need:

  • All original materials returned by consulate.  Each consulate handles this differently, but the documentation will likely be some mixture of the materials you submitted as part of your application, stamped with consulate seal.
  • One photocopy of your entire passport, cover to cover (that means every page, including blank pages!)
  • Three photocopies of your signature / photo page of your passport
  • Four photocopies of your visa

ASAP to ensure that all materials get to you promptly.

NYU Students: We'll send all e-mail communication to your NYU e-mail address (not your personal or Stern address), so check that account regularly or activate mail forwarding.  In addition, make sure that your addresses and phone numbers in NYUHome are updated so that we're able to contact you with important information throughout the semester.

Visiting Students: You'll create a NYUHome account prior to registering for classes (see #4). At that point, be sure to keep your contact information current and check your NYUHome e-mail account regularly.

The housing form is available through the online forms system (see #7).

NYU Students: Remember to cancel NYU Housing for next semester. Bring your original acceptance letter (plus a copy) to the Housing office at 383 Lafayette Street along with the housing cancellation form as soon as possible. The housing cancellation form will be available shortly. Questions? E-mail housing@nyu.edu .

Registration begins the week of November 16th.

You'll find the comprehensive list of classes here.  Pick out the courses you like, keeping in mind that some classes may fill before you're able to register.  For registration instructions, click either NYU Student or Visiting Student (this version also includes Blackboard instructions).

NYU Students:  Attending a Pre-Departure Orientation is required for all students.  At the PDO, you will meet staff from the site, learn about courses, student life, excursions, and much more.  For a calendar of these mandatory sessions, click here.

Visiting Students:  If you’re nearby and able to attend any on-campus events, we’d love to have you.  However, we’re also committed to making sure that those of you who don’t live near New York City are kept in the loop.  Here are a few ways we ensure that you’re just as well-informed as NYU students:

  1. We will send you weekly e-mails with comprehensive “what to do” lists and details.
  2. Our staff is always available to provide prompt assistance to any questions you have by e-mail or phone.
  3. We can put you in contact with students who attend our programs so that you can get inside information on what to expect.  To speak with a former student from your program, please email global.ambassadors@nyu.edu.

All Students:
The PowerPoint presentation from our latest pre-departure session is posted here.

Submit your Flight Information by December 2nd.

We provide you with information on discount flights in your acceptance packet or via a subsequent e-mail.  You can research your own flights as well, but we hope it gives you a sense of what's available.

December 2nd.

Our online forms system is where you'll submit information on your flights, passport, housing preferences, health insurance, and emergency contacts.  However, we also require two paper forms.  These are simple to complete, but will require your time and may require a visit to your physician, so please plan ahead. For detailed information on how to use the Webforms system, please click here.

Paper Forms to Mail In

  • Travel Release (paper form — please download, fill out & return)
  • Medical History (paper form—NYU students will receive their medical history form at the pre-departure orientation sessions. Visiting students will receive the form in their acceptance packet.)
