International education is a long-standing part of New York University’s global mission which includes a wide range of initiatives both in the United States and abroad to facilitate the exchange of knowledge across international boundaries. NYU’s study abroad tradition began in 1958 when NYU in Madrid opened its doors to American students. Since then NYU’s offerings of international opportunities has expanded rapidly and includes fully staffed academic centers in eight countries, exchange partnerships with some of the world’s most prestigious universities in 18 countries, short term summer programs in 17 countries, and specialized learning programs like film directing and nursing.

NYU operates nine programs during the academic year in Berlin, Germany; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Florence, Italy; Accra, Ghana; London, England; Madrid, Spain; Prague, the Czech Republic; Shanghai, China and Paris, France. Tel Aviv, Israel's cosmopolitan costal city, is the designated location for NYU's future study abroad site.

Who studies abroad with NYU?

At our academic centers in Argentina, China, the Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Ghana, Italy and Spain you’ll find a wide range of students. Up to 30% of students at some of our sites abroad come from colleges and universities other than NYU. These include many of the countries top-ranked private and public colleges and universities, giving each international center a diverse feel. All courses taken abroad on an NYU program are recorded on an official academic transcript, which makes for easy credit transfer to other US institutions.

What can I study when I go abroad with NYU?

To make study abroad more accessible to students from a variety of different majors, especially those which entail particularly structured courses of study (e.g. pre-med students or business students), NYU has created many specialized programs at NYU sites abroad and offers courses which commonly fulfill major or minor requirements. These are in addition to many of the language, culture and history courses you’d expect to find when studying abroad. Courses are offered in majors such as: math, biology, chemistry, physics, business, psychology and sociology - to name a few.
