Banking in NYC

When considering which bank to use in NYC, students (and parents) should think about bank chains that are located in their hometown first and then close to where their student will be be living while at NYU. As students will only live around Washington Square their first year, a branch that has multiple locations in the city will be the most convenient in the long run. Also, a bank in the student's hometown and in New York City allows even more convenience for parents to make deposits and assist with transaction when the student returns home during the summer and holidays.

That being said, most of the major national bank chains in the city have a number of branches and ATM lobbies throughout the city. Almost all offer free checking to students with an NYU ID Card or Acceptance Letter.

You can also do a google search of businesses by bank name or zipcode for banks within a certain area. Go to Google Maps and click on Find Businesses to search a particular area.

The New York University Credit Union (NYU FCU) is a not-for-profit financial institution that was established in 1982 to serve the New York University community. Emergency Check Cashing

The Bursar's Office offers an emergency personal check cashing service to NYU students enrolled in credit courses. This service is not available to SCPS Non-Credit students The following check cashing policies apply:

  • Personal checks of up to $50.00 per day may be cashed at the Bursar's Office located at 25 West 4th Street. A valid New York University I.D. card must be presented at the cashier's window.
  • If a check is returned, the student will be charged a $20.00 returned check fee and will be prevented from cashing future personal checks.
