Commuting at NYU requires managing information related to your travel, and staying up-to-date with important and helpful resources that can make your time on campus more efficient and your commute easier -- and in some cases, even less expensive!


Accommodations at the NYU Greenwich Hotel

Commuter/Off-Campus students may request a reservation for $15 per night on the same day of the reservation by 12 noon.

Please note the following policies:

  • Rooms are subject to availability.
  • The Greenwich Hotel only accepts credit card payment. Guests are required to provide a credit card at check-in. No cash or traveler's checks.
  • Rooms are for NYU students only, guests are not allowed.
  • Roommates may be requested but please note that they must be an NYU student and must submit their own reservation request. Roommates can be of the same gender only.
  • Walk-in reservations will not be permitted. The Greenwich Hotel is located at 636 Greenwich Street New York, NY 10014.


Lockers

  • Bobst Library. Lockers, both small and large, can be rented for $25 per semester or $65 per year (lasting through mid-August) at the Library Privileges office on the first floor of Bobst Library. Click for more information.
  • Brown Building/Silver Center. Priority is given to CAS science students. Lockers generally become available to everyone in mid-September for $10 per year ($5 thereafter with the lock), lasting through May. Visit the Brown Building, Room 565, or call 212-998-8481.
  • Coles Sports Center. Free lockers are available on a daily-use basis; otherwise, rental rates vary per size.  Small lockers are $25 for the Fall semester, $45 for the Fall & Spring semesters and $60 for a year (includes summer).  Large lockers are $35 for the Fall semester, $65 for the Fall & Spring semesters and $90 for the year (includes summer).   • Gallatin. The lockers are on the fifth floor of Gallatin (715 Broadway) and are for Gallatin students only. Call 212-998-9165.
  • Kimmel Center for University Life. Lockers are available for commuter students on a first come first served basis on the 3rd floor of the Kimmel Center. Students can reserve a locker at the Student Resource Center, Suite 210 of the Kimmel Center . To reserve a locker for the academic year a $20 deposit is required (cash only). Students must supply their own locks.  Locker rentals will become available for First Year Commuters on Monday Aug. 29th, 2011.LOCKER UPDATE: Unfortunately, there are no more lockers available in Kimmel. 
  • Palladium Sports Facility. Free lockers are available on a daily-use basis; otherwise, the rental rate is $90 for the Fall and Spring semesters, $45 for Summer and $125 for the entire year. Visit the Palladium Membership Office in the lower level of Palladium (140 East 14th Street). For more information, call 212-992-8510.
  • Stern School of Business: Lockers are available free of charge for the year for Stern students at the beginning of the fall semester. To obtain an application, please visit the Office of Student Life, Stern Undergraduate College, on the second floor of Tisch Hall (40 West Fourth Street). For more information, call 212-998-4020.


Transportation Discounts

  • New Jersey Transit: NJ TRANSIT offers full-time students (minimum 12 credits) a 25% discount for bus, rail, or light rail monthly passes. This is an auto-subscription program, each month you will get a new pass unless you cancel or suspend your account. There is a $3 processing fee each month for the program. Students must sign up by the tenth of the month to receive a pass for the following month. If you are interested in signing up, go to home.nyu.edu and click Enroll under the NYU Life Tab. 
  • New Jersey Transit: Military Personnel and Their Dependents - All military personnel and their dependents will be permitted to purchase transportation at the senior citizen/passengers with disabilities reduced fare rate upon showing their military or military dependent ID card. The following military personnel are entitled to this fare: Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard or Retired for Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard. 
  • Metropolitan Transit Authority: Although student discounts are not available for MTA subway and bus users, you can save money by purchasing 7-Day or 30-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCards.
  • Amtrak: Amtrak offers discounts for students who have a Student Advantage Card, an International Student Identification Card, who are active US Military personnel, or AAA members.
  • MetroNorth and the Long Island Rail Road: All individuals (not just students) can use the Mail and Ride program and save between 2% and 5% when you have monthly passes automatically mailed to your home.
