Getting Started at NYU

Welcome to the NYU community, and congratulations to the Freshman Class of 2016 and New Transfers for 2012!

To keep you and your parents prepared and on track for a smooth arrival at NYU, we've created Next Stop NYU.  The information listed below outline what you need to know and the steps you need to take to prepare for your arrival on campus.

You can also expect to receive separate communications this summer from your school about a host of items, including academic advisement and course registration.

We hope that this information helps ease your transition to NYU and turn any anxiety you may feel about beginning your studies at NYU into pure anticipation and excitement.

Upon Deposit

Residential Life and Housing Services Application E-mail

Within 5-7 days of the admission acceptance deposit, students will receive an e-mail with information about applying for NYU housing, including Special Interest options. Students interested in living on campus must complete the application and submit the housing application fee by June 1.

Health Responsibilities and Resources Mailing

This mailing contains important information about student health at NYU including the NYU sponsored insurance plans, instructions on completing mandatory health and immunization requirements that must be submitted to the Student Health Center by August 15. Sample documents are listed below:

Student Interest Survey Email

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will be sending two surveys via email to all incoming students. One survey will allow students to request information about various offices within the Division of Student Affairs.

The other survey will give students the option of anonymously telling us about their spiritual and sexual identity. Survey results will be used to help the Division of Student Affairs prepare appropriate levels of programming and services for incoming students

Financial Responsibilities and Resources Mailing

This mailing contains important information regarding the cost of attendance, financial aid, billing and payment options using NYU's eSuite in Albert (NYU's online student information service), payment plans, and the tuition insurance program.

June 1

Access to Job Listings and On-Campus Employment Registration

On June 1, all incoming students have access to the NYU Wasserman Center for Career Development, including NYU CareerNet (online database of part-time, full-time, summer, and internship positions).  Incoming students may also register for on-campus employment for summer and/or fall 2012.

On-Campus Housing Application Deadline

Students who are interested in living on campus must complete the online application and submit the $1000 application fee by June 1 in order to guarantee a housing assignment for the 2012-2013 academic year. Applications for Special Interest Housing options are also due by June 1.

Preparing for Arrival Mailing

Information about the NYU Bookstore and Computer Store, on-campus dining options, the NYUCard and Campus Cash, and a first glimpse at Welcome Week — NYU's jampacked schedule of events, programs, and services for incoming students held the week before the start of classes, as well the Commuter Overnight Retreat, Project Outreach and the NYU Welcome's You event on Move-In Day.

Contains information about the options available to students related to Study Away and other travel programs, as well as summer and January course options.

Parents News Mailing

Contains information for parents about what to expect in the coming months, navigating NYU (it's a big place, but we're here to help!), supporting your students, staying connected, Feshman Send-Offs, and Parents Day, held on October 20, 2012.

Housing Assignment Update Email

Students living on campus will receive instructions for accessing their housing assignment, move in time, and roommate contact information online.

Commuter Overnight Retreat Registration Opens

Fall Semester Bill Notification Email

Students should visit eSuite in Albert (NYU's online student information system) to view and pay the fall semester bill and to invite others (e.g. parents, guardians) to be authorized payers.

Residential Life and Housing Services Mailing

For students who will live on campus this semester, this mailing contains the Residential Life and Housing Services Guidebook and the Dining Guide, as well as helpful information to help you prepare for moving-in, mailing packages, and other helpful resources.

Fall Term Payment Due

To ensure students maintain their class reservations, the amount due must be paid by August 8 (via eSuite in Albert). Payment Plan options can be viewed at www.nyu.edu/bursar/paymentplans.

Online Scheduling for Welcome Week Opens

Go online to begin building your schedule of activities for Welcome Week. Don’t worry, you can add and revise as much as you like as you learn more about the many programs available at www.nyu.edu/welcome.

Textbook E-mail

The Bookstore collaborates with faculty members to provide students with a personalized textbook list. Students that have registered for class, can access their textbook list by entering their student ID at the Bookstore website at www.bookstores.nyu.edu.

Immunization and Student Health History Forms Due

New York State deadlines for completion of immunization documentation are strict and, if not met, can affect your ability to attend class and to move into your residence hall.

The Commuter Overnight Retreat

For students who will live off campus, this Commuter Preview allows new students an opportunity to visit NYU and meet other commuting students, as well as meet Commuter Assistants and other student leaders at this overnight dedicated event. Registration begins July 16.

August 26

NYU Welcomes You Event on Move-in Day

New undergraduate students and their family members are invited to stop by for refreshments, information, and to meet representatives from various NYU offices and organizations. It's a great place to meet other parents and students, take a break, get a bite, pick up some free stuff, and ask questions.  Shopping shuttles will also be available to local stores and students can also pick up their NYU Card.

August 27 – 31

Welcome Week

It’s finally here! An entire week (and then some) of more than 350 programs and social events to welcome new and transitioning students to the NYU community. Highlights include the Presidential Welcome and Reality Show: NYU, a musical written and performed by NYU students about making the transition to college life, and NYU Portraits, a performance about diversity, social justice, and service.

New International Student Check-in Deadline

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requires that all new and transfer F-1 and J-1 students report their arrival to NYU. The OISS offers Check-In workshops to enable students to meet this requirement. Failure to attend a mandatory Check-In workshop may jeopardize your ability to remain legally in the U.S.

Health Insurance Enrollment/Waiver Deadline

Most students are automatically enrolled in an NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan. Students can use the online process to change their NYU plan option or to waive the NYU plans if they maintain alternate insurance coverage that meets the University's criteria at www.nyu.edu/health/insurance.

October 20

Parents Day

Parents of new freshmen and transfer students are invited to attend this one-day program of workshops and receptions hosted by individual schools and Student Affairs offices. Look for additional details this summer.
