Documentation of your previous degree - high school diploma for undergraduate students or college degree for graduate students -  is a condition of your admission to, and graduation from, NYU.

If you are a current NYU student and did not provide documentation of your previous degree during the admissions process, you will be required to submit it as soon as possible upon matriculation at NYU.

Typically, the credential(s) proving prior degree are sent to NYU before the start of your first term at NYU; if you did not provide the document(s) to NYU at that time, you may be prevented from registering for subsequent semesters until the documentation is received.

If you have been prevented from registering due to missing document(s):
  • If you have not already done so, have your previous school(s) send NYU your final/official documents as soon as possible. Once the documents are received and processed, you will be permitted to register.
  • If you believe your document(s) should have been received by NYU:

Undergraduate Students

Where you went to high school and the type of high school you attended determines what document(s) are needed by NYU.

Refer to this site to determine which document(s) are required depending on the type of high school you attended.

Generally, you will need:

  • Your high school to submit your final/official transcript directly to NYU:
    • All transcripts sent from your previous school(s) to NYU must bear an official stamp and come from a school official.
      • Enrollment verifications are not acceptable proof of graduation.
      • If your transcripts/graduation documents are in languages other than English, you will also need to submit a certified translation of the documents in addition to the documents in the original language.
    • Transcripts can be emailed from your previous school, from an official school official’s email address, to academic.records@nyu.edu (preferred method) or mailed directly from your school to: New York University, Office of the Registrar, 383 Lafayette Street, 1st Floor, New York, NY 10003.
  • If you have completed A-Level exams: Submit your final/original certificates.
    • Certificates can be emailed from your previous school and from an official school official's email address to academic.records@nyu.edu or mailed directly from your school to: New York University, Office of the Registrar, 383 Lafayette Street, 1st Floor, New York, NY 10003.
    • If you want to keep your original certificates, you can bring them to a StudentLink Center where a copy will be made to be used for processing. Note that we cannot accept previously made copies and need to see the original.
    • Final certificates/Cambridge Pre-U exam results must bear advanced level scores, and be submitted as soon as possible/they are available.
  • If you have completed the International Baccalaureate (IB): submit your final transcript/scores.
    • Scores must be submitted electronically directly from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to NYU. Refer to this site for steps on how to send your scores to NYU.
    • U.S. students and international students from U.S.-accredited schools who simultaneously completed the high school and IB diploma only need to submit their final/official high school transcript to satisfy the proof of graduation policy.
  • If you are a second bachelor's degree student, you will need to submit your final, official transcript from your previous bachelor's degree and do not have to submit your high school transcript.

Graduate and Professional Students

Documentation of college graduation at or beyond the bachelor's level is required for graduate students.

A final, official transcript that notes the degree awarded and graduation date is required of all graduate and professional students. If your transcript does not contain that information, you will be asked for the diploma/graduation certificate as a supplement.

  • Have your previous school(s) send NYU your final/official transcript(s) bearing an official stamp.
    • Enrollment verifications are not acceptable proof of graduation.
    • If your transcripts/graduation documents are in languages other than English, you will need to submit a certified translation of the documents in addition to the documents in the original language.
  • Transcripts can be emailed from your previous school, from an official school official’s email address, to academic.records@nyu.edu (preferred method) or mailed directly from your school to: New York University, Office of the Registrar, 383 Lafayette Street, 1st Floor, New York, NY 10003.
Some graduate and professional schools have specific documentation requirements. Contact your school's Admissions Office for further information.
