The NYU Wasserman Center is committed to assisting NYU alumni with their career development after graduation. We offer general career services to alumni from eligible NYU schools, which include individual career coaching, in-person and virtual professional development events, and online job search resources.

Career Coaching

Schedule a 30-minute appointment on Handshake to meet with an alumni career coach in-person, by phone, or virtually through Skype or Google Hangouts. We can work with you to assess your interests and skills, create a strategic action plan for your job search, prepare for an interview, enhance your resume and cover letter, and more.

Scope of Services

While we recognize that every career journey is unique, there are some requests that extend beyond our scope of services. We are unable to provide resume and cover letter writing services, technical/computer trainings, industry specialized or legal advice, alumni or employer contact information, or job placement services. Instead, we encourage you to take a proactive role in your professional development and will work with you to identify and achieve your career-related goals.

Before Your Appointment

At least two days prior to your appointment, please send the career coach your goals/questions for the meeting, and any relevant materials you would like us to review. This will help us best prepare for your appointment. For in-person appointments at any of our office locations, be sure to bring a valid photo ID and check-in at the front security desk when you enter the building.

During Your Appointment

Our role as a career coach is to listen, provide you with career advice, and identify the best strategies and resources to support your next steps. During the meeting we may also ask questions about your current and past work experiences, academic background, job search techniques, and other professional development activities.

After Your Appointment

We work to provide you with specific next steps to follow up on after our appointment ends, and may also send you additional resources via email. We suggest at least 4-6 weeks in between appointments to take action on next steps we’ve discussed.

Drop-in Hours

These five-minute meetings are available during various times each week without an appointment on a first-come, first-served basis. Drop-in hours are primarily used to review resumes, cover letters and/or answer quick career development-related questions. Be sure to print any materials ahead of time, or have them ready for us to review on your laptop or tablet before you come in.

Building Access

Your alumni card does not give you access to most University buildings and services. Access to the Wasserman Center is granted to alumni with a valid photo ID up to one hour before you have a coaching appointment, drop-in, or event to attend. Attempting to use our offices for other purposes may result in a restriction of your career services at the Wasserman Center.

When you arrive at any of our office locations, you must check-in at the front security desk. We suggest you allow at least 5-10 minutes before your scheduled time to complete the check-in process.  

Handshake (effective June 24th)

As an NYU alumni you have free access to job listings on Handshake. Through this system, you can also schedule career coaching appointments, pre-register for alumni-focused events, and explore our career development resources.

NYU CareerNet (ending July 31st)

As an NYU alumni you have free access to job listings on NYU CareerNet. Through this system, you can also schedule career coaching appointments, pre-register for alumni-focused events, and explore our career development resources. Please download and personal career documents by 7/31/19 since nothing will be transferred over.

Professional Development Events

The Wasserman Center is excited to partner with career experts around the world to deliver the latest job search and career development strategies to NYU alumni. You can learn more and RSVP for upcoming events in the following ways:

  • Receive monthly Alumni eNewsletter: Log in to your Handshake account and go to Your Name > Settings & Privacy. Click on notification preferences on the left hand side. Under General opt-in to receive marketing emails, as well other areas of focus related to your needs.
  • Search for Events: Go to Handshake and click Events > Event Search and search for “Alumni” or visit the NYU Alumni Association’s event calendar.

Printing and Computer Services

Printing and computer services are not available at the Wasserman Center. If you need materials printed for an appointment, email them to your career coach ahead of time. Alternatively, you can find local computer and printing services through UPS, FedEx Office or The New York Public Library. We do not offer computer work areas, co-working spaces, or private rooms for personal or business use at this time.

Eligibility

  • Alumni are defined as graduates with an Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, Graduate Certificate, or Doctoral degree from an eligible NYU school who completed their NYU degree(s) more than one year ago.
  • Recent alumni who have graduated within 12 months have unlimited access to all of the Wasserman Center's services, events, and programs (except On-Campus Recruitment and computer/printing resources), in addition to the services listed on this page.
  • Stern School of Business (Graduate), School of Law, School of Medicine, and College of Dentistry alumni are not eligible for Wasserman Center services and should seek assistance through their NYU school or department.
