Mental Health Services in London

While studying abroad can be an incredible experience, it often takes time to adjust to a new culture, living arrangements, food, language and immersion in the unfamiliar. Some students may feel overwhelmed, others homesick. Some may feel afraid, and others depressed. Students may just feel out of sorts.

Attitudes toward counseling, or therapy, vary from one country to another. Similarly, the availability of resources and quality of services may differ from what a student is accustomed to in their home country. Therefore, it makes sense to plan ahead before departure. Call the Wellness Exchange at +1.212.443.9999 or write to wellness.exchange@nyu.edu if help is needed in making connections to mental health professionals abroad.

To meet the diverse mental health and wellness needs of our students, NYU London has one full-time and one part-time onsite counselor, both based on the third floor of the Academic Centre at 6 Bedford Square to support students during their time abroad and to assist them in connecting locally to additional mental health resources, if needed.

Counseling sessions are available on an appointment or walk-in basis.

To make an appointment, please email nyul.counseling@nyu.edu. Appointment times with the onsite counselors run from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday.

Students can be seen for walk-in appointments (20-30 minutes; first come, first serve) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM and on Thursdays from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM.

In the event that the prescription is not available in the UK, students should receive enough medication to last until their return. (Note: for some conditions and some medications, this is not possible).

If the student's prescription is available in the UK, the onsite counselors or the Wellness Exchange can provide the student with referrals to local psychiatrists who accept the student's insurance and who can follow the student (in collaboration with their home provider and the onsite counselors) and write prescription refills. Please note that prescriptions from foreign doctors cannot be filled in the UK.

Insurance Services in London

New York University requires that students studying away as part of their education program be covered under an NYU-sponsored health insurance plan. Students must continue to maintain health insurance coverage in their home countries in the event they need to return home.
