Allergy and Immunology

Allergy

An appointment is required to access these services.

The SHC allergist is available by appointment only. SHC's Allergy Department provides full services for evaluation, information, education, testing and treatment of allergies. The staff includes a board-certified allergist and registered nurses.

Allergy Services are available to all NYU students. Students already receiving allergy desensitization injections at home can continue their treatments while at NYU, but only after a consultation with the SHC allergist.

Allergy testing is available by appointment. The allergist will review the test results with you to discuss treatment options.

Immunology

An appointment is required to access these services.

(The above vaccines are also administered in Primary Care.)

These vaccines are billed to the student’s medical insurance. Under the Affordable Care Act, most medical insurances will cover these vaccinations as preventive care if the insured student meets the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) criteria for immunization.

New York State requires that all students have the necessary inoculations (link to Health Requirements page) to ensure your well-being and the vitality of the NYU community. The Immunology Department at the Student Health Center offers the required immunizations for a fee.

Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) Titers can be performed for students who have been immunized but are lacking vaccination documentation required by New York State and NYU upon admission. The blood tests are sent to Quest Diagnostics and are billed to the student’s medical insurance. Students are responsible to verify their insurance plan coverage for laboratory testing and to verify that Quest Diagnostics is an in-network provider for their insurance plan.

Flu Shots for Students

Annual flu vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect not only yourself from influenza, but it also protects people around you, including those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness.

Where to go for vaccination:

  • Flu vaccine is available through the NYU Student Health Center for NYU students only.
    • Flu Vaccine is available for FREE to NYU students at Flu Vaccine Outreach events sponsored by the Student Health Center
    • Flu vaccine is available in the Student Health Center by appointment.
    • The $10 charge for flu vaccine administered in the Student Health Center is billed to the student’s insurance.  Flu Vaccine is covered under most insurance policies as a preventive service.
