Library Stacks hours: Monday-Sunday, 7 am-midnight
LL1 and LL2 study areas: open 24 hours

The Elmer Holmes Bobst Library, designed by Philip Johnson and Richard Foster, opened in 1973. It is part of an eight-library system and serves as the primary research facility for New York University, housing over 3 million of the University’s 4.6 million volumes. In addition to books, journals, and other print materials, the library provides access to many nonprint resources. These include thousands of electronic journals and databases that you can connect to from your home or residence hall; extensive video and audio collections; and microforms. The library is visited by over 6,000 users daily and checks out almost one million books each year. The library has more than 2,000 seats for study, and a wireless Internet connection is available on all floors.

Faculty

The members of New York University’s distinguished faculty are known not only for their excellence in teaching but also for research and leadership in their respective fields.

Faculty Office Hours

Most faculty members have office hours. This is an excellent time to meet with your professor to ask questions regarding course work and class lectures and to receive help on papers and assignments. By taking advantage of office hours, you are giving your professor a chance to get to know you, in addition to gaining important insight and direction concerning your studies.

Faculty in the Residence Halls

Most residence halls have at least one member of the faculty connected to the hall community. Faculty fellows and faculty affiliates work closely with your residence hall staff to foster an intellectual environment that encourages the exchange of ideas. Interaction with faculty and participation in a wide range of programmatic opportunities offers you the benefits of “small college” life within the larger contexts of both the University and the city of New York.

Student Advisement

Academic advisement is crucial when choosing your major, academic program, and required courses. Advisement is given either through a central school office or through your department. Your academic adviser will ensure that you’re on the right track and will help you to make important academic decisions. Check the advisement Web site for detailed information concerning policies and procedures for your area. Graduate students should go to their departments for advisement and registration assistance.

Student Affairs and Advisement in Schools and Colleges

Anytime you have questions about academics, your department, or degree requirements, the student affairs or advisement office of your school or college is an excellent resource. In addition, these offices offer orientation programs to familiarize you with your school and other activities throughout the year.
