Dear Students,

Welcome to New York University, the largest private university in the United States and leader among the world’s great universities. You are now part of a student community that is unsurpassed in variety, breadth, and quality. In your time here, you will encounter, in addition to this special peer group, a faculty of international eminence.

And welcome to the neighborhood! Washington Square is at the heart of a unique village and a spectacular city, an astonishing environment for learning, filled to overflowing with marvelous museums, libraries, art galleries—a cultural feast of lectures, concerts, films, and theatre.

Your studies will be demanding, but I know that you will find time to enrich campus life with your leadership abilities. To match your considerable talents and energies is a multifaceted program of activities—from politics to jazz to drama, from debate teams and campus fellowships to Greek life and sports.

You will find that our community places enormous value on the humanizing and civilizing power of service. There are literally hundreds of organizations in which you may serve the larger community, including the President’s C-Team, the NYU Clothes Line, Campus Harvest, America Reads, and many others that are described online and available for your review. As a volunteer, you will not only contribute valuable service to those who need it, but you will also build friendships and memories that last a lifetime. I am honored to be president of a University made up of so many young men and women who make service to others a priority in their lives.

Again, welcome to our University, so deeply rooted in the intellectual and cultural life of our neighborhood and our city.

Sincerely,

John Sexton
President
