Cultivating Culture

As the temperature rises, some of the city's finest cultural institutions take vacation in the park, while others kick of summer seasons.

The Metropolitan Opera Free Summer Events! The Met celebrates summer with LIVE in HD screenings on the Lincoln Center Plaza and a recital series in parks in all five NYC boroughs. For more information, check here.

New York Philharmonic July 14th through the 17th enjoy free concerts in parks around the city. See a schedule by checking here. Want more? Check out the Summertime Classics concerts taking place at Avery Fisher Hall June 30th through July 10th. Student rush tickets are sometimes available for Philharmonic events in advance or at the box office on the day of the performance.
Shakespeare in the Park The Public Theater presents Twelfth Night and The Bacchae at the Delaorte Theater in Central Park. Tickets are free and only available beginning at 1 pm on the day of the performance at selected locations or via online lottery. Lines can be long and there is a limit of 2 tickets per person, but thousands of theatergoers agree the shows are worth it! More information at www.publictheater.org.
Shakespeare in the Parking Lot July 3 - 19 and July 24 - August 10
The Drilling CompaNY's barebones approach brings free Shakespeare (Twelfth Night and Henry V) to the lot at the corner of Ludlow and Broome Streets. No lines. No Waiting. No joke. Check here for details.
River to River Festival Over 500 summer events in Lower Manhattan including performances, art installations, carfts, walking tours, lectures and events for kids. For more information check www.rivertorivernyc.com
Celebrate Brooklyn Free music, dance, spoken word, and film in Prospect Park. This year's slate includes artists such as Big Daddy Kane, They Might Be Giants (for kids), and Animal Collective! For more info, check here.
Riverflicks Free popcorn and free films at Pier 54. Wednesdays for grown-ups, Fridays for the whole family. Seating is limited, so arrive early. Go to www.hudsonriverpark.org for more information.
