GETTING INVOLVED on Campus
Developing new relationships can be one of the more difficult responsibilities a student has when they are new to NYU. Encouraging your student to join a student organization is one of the best ways help your student feel a sense of community and connectedness. NYU has over 400 student clubs and organizations ranging from arts to politics, recreation to religion, and academic to social. Additionally, there are club sports, student government associations, community service opportunities, and musical ensembles to choose from. For links to the various involvement opportunities, click here.

LEARNING and TUTORING CENTERS
As we get closer to the mid point of the semester, some students may be struggling to meet their academic goals or are experiencing stress over their courseload. This is especially true for first-year students who can have trouble adjusting to the more independent, work-intensive environment of college level courses. This is a good time to check in with your student with open ended questions about his/her academic experience. What is their favorite class? What is one new thing he/she has learned? If your student needs assistance, you can point your student to NYU's academic support resources:

ROOMMATE ISSUES
Living in a residence hall can be one of the most exciting, rewarding and frustrating experiences your student will have during his/her college years. During move-in, students are asked to complete a Roommate Agreement form with their new roommate(s). This is an opportunity for students to talk about their habits, interests and needs, as well as to establish expectations about living together (like cleaning responsibilities, guests, and sharing things). We hope that by using this form, students will be able to resolve many of the issues that arise in the residence hall on their own. However, know that students can always seek assistance from their Resident Assistant (RA) or Resident Hall Director (RHD) should the need arise. For additional information on assisting your student with roommate issues, click here.

PLANNING for BREAKS
With a population of students that is more and more global, we understand the importance of advance planning for travel during break periods. Although we are providing you with dates below, students should also check their course syllabus or consult with their faculty member to reconfirm class meeting and exam schedules. The following are upcoming break periods:

  • There is no break for Fall 2009 until the Thanksgiving Break.
  • The university closes for Thanksgiving from Thursday November 26th - Sunday 29th. Although classes are scheduled to be held on Wednesday, November 25th, students should check with their professors to see if their class will be held on that day.
